Trying to get my stash ordered but have a few more ??'s

I was going to order 30 standard infant Chinese prefolds from Pinstripes and Polkadots when someone mentioned Green Mountain Diapers.

So looking at the GMD prefolds, they seem wider, am I correct? And since I tend to have heavy-set babies, does a wider prefold make a big difference in the fit if you Snappi?? Or is it kind of a non-issue?? I will be using Thirsties DUO Wraps if that helps...

AND NOW -- in addition to the width of the diaper, what is the verdict on the thickness (4-6-4 vs 4-8-4, or standard vs premium)? I was so poised to order today and then these two questions stopped my progress. TIA for any advice!

I made my own prefolds & ds is a big baby (8lb 9oz at birth & gained approx 3lbs a month for the first 6 months). I find the width of the middle section of my prefolds a little wider than what I would prefer. For my next I will make some more prefolds for the first few months & I will specifically make them narrower. Hope that helps.

The GMD prefolds' benefit is that you don't have to fold down the back b/c they are the right length for the width. But, esp. in the bigger sizes, their larger center panel prevents it from being as trim side-to-side as I would like.

I always buy 4x8x4.

But if I did the 'jelly roll', would the extra width still matter? It would get rolled in to wherever I decided to stop rolling, wouldn't it? I'm sorry I have so many questions, the one mama I knew who used CDs isn't around here anymore so I am stuck trying to visualize how I can make this work best for me with nothing tangible to look at/touch/try and very little money or time to correct an error. Thank you so much for helping...

It is not the fold you use that makes the difference here. I never trifold, though if you did, the larger center panel would definitely be annoying. It is that the center panel is thicker and stiffer. Once you get to what GMD calls browns or light browns, the center panel was wide enough to stand away from the lower sides of dd's bum, so it made for a wider/bigger/less trim butt. She actually has a trimmer butt in a premium size prefold with the top folded down.

I prefer 4x6x4...less bulky. I bought the standard size and trimmed about 3 inches off before washing. More like the Green Mountain, better trimness, don't have to fold down the rise, and an instant doubler (serge the ends of the pieces you trim). And cheaper.

If you don't sew/serge....I find the 4x6x4 fit trimmer, of course not as absorbant, but still ok. I hated having to fold down the rise on a 4x8x4.
