Amazing August Abundant Alternatives Chat - Page 9

Had a great appointment with my new md. I went in and looked at her book shelf-two thumbs up. "chronic candidiasis" "hypericum and depression" "panic free-eliminate anxiety without drugs and take control of your life" "the family bed". So really cool.
She understood a lot of where I was coming from and we almost completely agreed with each other. I'm getting a panel of testing done. But am just realizing that although I believe she is testing the right kind of thyroid components, I don't think it's the saliva test.
She was mildly reluctant to do the mthfr test because she didn't think insurance would pay. I'm going to think on that.
She has Thorne products available to buy which I think is cool. Ummm.
She recommended NAET for the boys and briefly mentioned she did energy testing for some things.
So I really feel like I have someone on my side, which is such a relief.

Carren, this is the NPR woman in Brookline.

One more plus, the gown I had to change into was complete coverage what a relief to no need to be pulling and tugging the entire time.

Didn't mean to nag just thought it was a cool idea. I need to order now so that it arrives hopefully next week and we can start playing around with it.

Then this afternoon I got curious and decided to taste the zinc sulfate in my cabinet that I got for taste testing and hadn't yet used. OMG it was the most awful thing! And I spent a long time trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I am so glad I didn't spread it around my mouth more before I spit it out. I was actually rubbing my tongue and roof of my mouth with a washcloth to try to get rid of it, in addition to brushing my teeth very vigorously.
Yay for zinc being nasty! I've read that that's the response people are supposed to have, but it was better than local tapwater to me when I did it a couple years ago. Though you're saying that the regular zinc sulfate (which brand?) you've got doesn't agree with the 8-mineral kit? That is confusing and concerning.

And I made the peanut butter cookies. I ate more of the dough than the cookies though!!

On the calcium note, anyone know how much 200ml is? My rooibas tea that I drink a lot of has 1 mg of calcium and 1.6 mg of magnesium per 200ml. So I'm getting a little in there too.

A typical water bottle is a half liter, so 500mL. And I'm talking about getting 1000-1500mg/day. So that's just going to be a teeny drop in the bucket. Sorry

Someone on another list was talking about coconut water/coconut milk being a decent source. I remember it being okaaay, but not that great. Someone want to look into that one?

and from nutritiondata.com:
http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/n...roducts/3115/2
1 cup coconut water has:
48mg (5% RDA) phosphorus
58mg (6%) calcium
60mg (15%) magnesium
other minerals of note are sodium, potassium and manganese

1 ounce dried coconut meat has
58mg (6% RDA) phosphorus
7mg (1%) calcium
25mg (6%) magnesium
plus higher amounts of copper and manganese

I don't have anything against oxalates, myself, just that they bind to calcium really tightly, so that neither gets absorbed. Since I'm so worried about getting enough calcium, I want to make sure I'm not fooling myself, thinking I'm getting the good stuff when it's just an illusion.

Okay, I need a soaked oatmeal recipe that's gluten, casein, egg, soy, treenut, peanut and coconut free which doesn't require water kefir (since I don't have any). Takers?

Hmmm...again, it doesn't make sense that we 'can't get enough calcium' from whole food. Most adults didn't evolve drinking milk, I imagine. So, they'd get "enough" from other sources, probably raw or cooked plants. I'd always 'heard' that the calcium from plants was more bio-available. I understand that seems opposed to 'calcium binding with oxalates'.

Blood calcium tests are useless. The body will spare no expense keeping the blood levels stable, standard testing will tell you nothing about your bones or diet. Only red blood cell testing will be accurate.

I have also read that low D can be the result of low calcium intake. I forget where though! Probably Chris Masterjohn's articles at WAPF?

Jacqueline,
Can you use vinegar or lemon juice as your acid in soaking oatmeal?

My understanding was that the traditional diets which didn't contain milk got their calcium from other animal sources such as bones or shells, ground up or broths. The Polynesians, Eskimos, Maori and Gaelic from fish for example. I can't recall if egg shells were used...? Minerals from plants cannot be absorbed unless eaten with fat soluble vitamins from animals.

Calcium is important. Get more.

I would say deposits/growths are because of being low in nutrients that are compliments to calcium: magnesium most especially. K2. A/D. Phosphorus.

I seem to remember my Gran throwing egg shells in her stock. My mom (and to some extent myself) could never bring herself to make broth like Gran did.. Her stock pot looked like other people's garbage or compost piles... Ends of celery, skins of onions, bones, egg shells, the tiny little garlic cloves (including skins), lemon and orange peels (but not too many or it'll taste bitter)...

I can do both vinegar (rice, white wine blah blah) and lemon juice.. But every recipe I've found says to add flour?

For stinky (left) armpits try baking soda, it's been my deoderant for a long time, works great!

What are you making, I thought you just wanted to soak oatmeal?

According to the coconut milk can, there's 0% calcium in it...

So I'm getting probably 5mg of calcium a day from my iced tea? Wow, that's pathetic. I stuck broccoli and swiss chard in my rice noodle/tomato sauce/sausage/pine nut ricotta bake tonight, so I got some there.
