Newborn CD Questions

I've still got 5 months to go before #2 arrives, but what can I say, I'm a planner

We didn't start CD'ing DS until he was 4 months old. We got 24 infant prefolds and borrowed a few small Bummis covers (which I've since returned). Over time I added 10 BGOS pockets, which we use while out and about. He's 22 months and still fits into the infant prefolds, which we use around the house either coverless or with wool.

For the newborn, I plan to use our infant prefolds (with the front folded down to make the size right) and get some Proraps. I'll probably buy a 6-pack from nicki's diapers, and I'm wondering if I should get all Newborns or a combo of newborns and smalls. DS was 7lb at birth and we're expecting another boy. DS is a peanut - on the lower end of average for height but very slim and off the charts for weight. He still fits into almost all of his clothes from last summer in 6-12mos, 6-9mos, or 12mos. We have one medium Prorap and it's huge on him. I guess what I'm wondering is, will we need 6 covers for the newborn stage or would something like 4 be enough, so we have a couple Smalls when he's ready?

Also, I'm hoping to get some BG XS AIO's for out-and-about during the newborn stage. I try to get out of the house every morning for a few hours before DS's nap, and then we usually stay home in the afternoons. Will 6 be enough? If DS is still in dipes I'll probably have to wash every night, or at least every other day (our current stash for DS is enough to wash every 3-4 days).

Last question, what about meconium? I'll probably stick to prefolds in the beginning so I don't have to worry about meconium in the BG's, but is there anything special I need to know about washing?

TIA for any replies

I think you need 6 XS/NB covers so you aren't running out in a pinch. Try the Thirsties XS or the new Thirsties Duo - they should last for 4 and 9 months respectively, so you'll get more value.

I would think 6-8 XS BG 3.0 AIOs would be enough.

For meconium, I didn't do anything special, and it didn't stain, but some people lay a washcloth in the diaper as a liner. The real issue with meconium is that it is so hard to wipe off the baby's bum, so you should oil the bum so you don't have to scrub it.

Congratulations!!!

You can survive on 4 covers for the nb stage - you might just have to hand wash in between if you run out before laundry time. 6 or 8 is more convenient for washing every 2 days, but plenty of people get by on less.

Thanks for the replies! Maybe I'll do all 6 in the NB size then. Those Thirsties Duos look really cool, but would be a much larger initial investment (though I know they'd save us money in the long run).
