dd2 is in a sposie right now... her bum was so red I had to get some. She is 5 days old and I am exclusively breastfeeding. I also put some vaseline on it for a barrier, which I hate but it was the only thing that worked with DD1 and I was at a loss.

I am thinking it could be from a few things.

I am limited on little diapers and covers (her cord stump is still on) and maybe I am leaving them on too long?

I washed them with a scented detergent a load or so ago, I was desperate and out of my sun free and clear which is what I am using). I did strip them with a hot soak, hot prewash, and hot wash, second hot wash and rinse with NO detergent, there was no bubbles at all.

I was using disposable wipes, which now I changed to cloth wipes with just warm water. I am patting not wiping (the skin looks almost close to breaking).

Can anyone suggest anything? This happened with DD1 ( she was not ebfed, had major excema, food allergies and skin issues though). At that time I washed in Dawn, baking soda, and vinegar in the rinse.

HELP? LOL

Honestly, Torre, any of the things you suggested could be the cause. Some babies, especially when really little are just sensitive to the wetness, so changing more often might help, or using fleece liners perhaps.

The detergent could have done it, but seems like you rinsed them pretty well.

Disposible wipes can cause irriation, too - I've found my son does best with cloth wipes, but with a wipe solution. I just use an old pop bottle and mix about a t. of olive oil, a t. of baby wash (actually Dr. Bronners at the moment) and warm water.

Keep posting if it doesn't clear up! We can help you trouble shoot some more.

Plain water....cloth wipes...helps alot...also putting breastmilk on her bum and letting it air dry....also lay her on a thick pad for a few hours...air dry...this will pass....she will be fine....congrads on your new baby.

OOOO never thought of putting BM on it.

I will put her on a chux pad with no diaper tomorrow during her naps and BM it up..

I am going to continue to use sposies at night and change her more often, too.

I really WANT to CD her, I just need to figure this out.

I washed the dirty dipes with all plain water and they honestly came out clean. I am now using cloth wipes with only warm water... Tomorrow is a new day.

dd1 always had diaper rash and I feel that her urine was to acidic. We would use an ointment called Pinxav and it cleared her right up. Hope that helps and maybe you are eating some acidic foods that are passing to her.

You know, I thought of the acidic food thing yesterday. I drink A LOT of cranberry juice. So today, I am going to totally cut it out and see if that helps.

The sposies and vaseline are not helping, although it isn't getting worse. I honestly think it may be a number of things.

So I am using BM on it
cutting out cranberry juice
and washing all diapering things with only hot water for now

congrats on your new little one! you know, Dr. Sears always says to make sure the baby bottoms get lots of fresh air. when my dd was tiny and got a rash, I held her or laid her down diaperless as much as I could to let her air out. It is warm weather! this is just an idea - you might feel like she's still too little to not have her all bundled, and I would understand that.

good luck with baby, cloth dipes, and breastfeeding!

It sounds like you've tried about everything! My DS is much older, but we've had persistent diaper rash. We eventually added wipe solution cubes and a tube of Grandma El's to our diaper routine. It's helped a ton. You can also try liners with cloth diapers when you're ready to revisit them, even though you've washed and rewashed the diapers. I'd just keep adding/taking away one step at a time until you find out what is the cause.
