Nipple Stimulation How-To?

This is something that's been suggested quite a bit lately by numerous people to get things going (I'm 41+4) and many women I know swear by it.

But everything I find or read on the subject is extremely vague on the best way to do nipple stimulation (on yourself). I know it can't be rocket science, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Can anyone explain or describe to me the proper way to do nipple stimulation? And any tips or hints would be appreciated, too.

Is there any particular time that it's good to do it, or just whenever? I have been feeling slightly more action down in my lower uterus, almost in my pelvic area. Kind of crampy and it tends to reach around to my back at times. Not painful, just really intense, but it's very sporadic and hours - sometimes a day or two - apart. I was wondering if nipple stimulation during times like that would have added effect.

Thanks for your advice!

this is what I tell my ladies (if this is used)

use olive oil, (not lotion)-so there is no friction. Roll your nipples (just touching them...and 'rolling') for one minute, then stop for a minute, then repeat.
I suggest that they do this for 1/2 hour or 45 minutes-or until they are feeling contractions that do not go away when they stop nipple stimulation.
But, if they do not have any contractions, do not continue doing it. If it does not work to bring on contractions, then you are not ready to deliver that baby yet. Wait.

Thank you very much for your advice. That is exactly the kind of guidance I was looking for. I've just been doing it dry for five minutes at a time, and it definitely increases the level of pressure or activity down there. I can't say if it's contractions or labor or not, but it definitely ups the intensity of feeling in my uterus.

I enlisted my DH's help on this one. I just let him play with them the same way he would normally when we DTD. Two nights before my baby was born, he did quite a bit of nipple play and we DTD. I had contractions all.night.long. The following night we did nothing (I was exhausted from being up most of the night before) and nothing happened. The night after that, I went into labor on my own. I had a quick and fairly easy labor. So even if it doesn't bring the baby right away, those contractions are still doing something! Sending more labor vibes your way, Andi! :

Thanks, Mama! I have to agree with you that even if it doesn't turn into active labor, it's gotta be helping! We've started relaxing in our birthing pool every night, so I told him last night we'll probably start incorporating some nipple stimulation into that as well. No better time than when you're that relaxed and in that frame of mind.
