new born and a beco or ergo?

I'm confused about being able to use either of these carriers for a newborn. I already have an Ergo and a friend who will give me an infant insert but does it really work for a new born? or do you have to wait until they're bigger.

Does the Beco with the built in insert work for a new born? And does it sling them from their crotch or does it give the seated support even though their little legs can't wrap around you yet?

Or am I better off with a sling or a wrap for the newborn stage?

I think you'd be better off with a sling or wrap.
I have an Ergo and I didn't really like it until she was around 6 months. And then I made a mei tai and I haven't used it since. It was just too bulky for me.

We have an Ergo and loved it for our older daughter but it did not work, even with the insert for the newborn stage. Our son was too big to use the insert, uncomfortable in the froggy position and unable to sit with his legs splayed open wide enough to sit in it normally. The most comfortable thing I've used, even though it is a pain to wrap is the Moby. The easiest thing to nurse in has been a ring sling and easy to pop the baby in and out--but the least comfortable for long wearing or heavy babies...We just bought a pikkolo which can adjust width to allow for a new born to sit in it normally like an Ergo. Its better than the Ergo for that. It seems like an Ergo in all ways but with more features. My son is heavy and even at 2 mo. the Pikkolo is uncomfortable without the support belt that you have to buy separately and this transfers the weight to the hips--supposedly. I haven't gotten mine yet. I'm also waiting for this thing called the blue celery, which I think is a hybrid sling/wrap and looks very comfy.

We used the ergo with my DS starting at about 3 weeks. We kept his legs in. Think how they are positioned when sleeping with their legs curled under them and butt up in hte air. That postion, only upright.

DS was big though, by 3 weeks he was over 10 lbs. We got a beco at about 2 months old (13 lbs?) and he was too big for the infant portion. i like both carriers equally, but the beco is a little harder to BF in due to the chest piece, but it can be done.
