Sometimes I question the value of using anything but prefolds

Forgive me if I'm going off half-cocked, but I'm frustrated and need to vent.

I bought brand new BumGenius 3.0 a year ago, and (you probably already guessed) the velcro is already shot on them. So I bought a snap press, and am spending 30-60 minutes per diaper to convert them to snaps. But I'm not even confident that the snaps are working that great either. Besides that, I'm paying someone $2-3 per diaper to replace the (shot) elastic in them. I've used fitteds, covers, pockets....and when I really think about the cost of these versus the benefits they supposedly offer, I feel like an idiot that I don't just stay with prefolds.

DS was a squirmy little thing who wouldn't stay put long enough to get a prefold on him, so maybe I'm forgetting how much $ I was willing to pay to solve that problem.

But today I'm just disallusioned with the cost/benefit of the "improved" diapers. Hoping #2 is a serene, immobile little person who will let my frugal little soul go with prefolds like I know I should.

Anyone else?

I agree. Definitely about BG's anyway. My experince with them was awful. I've had luck with my fuzzi bunz and GADs though. But, I really do see the value in prefolds...custom fit, no elastic to worry about, and if they get ruined, they are super cheap to replace. Not so much with pockets.

After watching my friend struggling to wash her aio's & pockets without ruining them & then them still not lasting through 2 children I went with prefolds. I made them myself & they cost me less than $2 a diaper.

Can you snappi or just trifold in a cover with your squirmer?

I tried pockets, and fitteds, and all-in-ones and all the rest of it. In the end, I'd always come back to either prefolds, or Motherease fitteds and wool.

FWIW, my BG were crap. I've never used a diaper that held up to wear so poorly, in all my 5 years of diapering.

I agree with the BG- we've had ours for about 18 months now and they are done. I love my FB but the PUL is starting to go on some of the older ones.

However, I am glad I got them because I knew nothing about cloth diapers when I started- getting pocket dipes were good for me because it eased me into it! I know I would have stopped using prefolds pretty quick. For this baby I am getting a mix of prefolds, prefolds, and fitteds. Now that I know what I am doing, prefolds don't intimidate me.

I love my BGs, although we've only used them for a few months. I have heard some horror stories about them though. We break even on the cost of the BGs vs sposies in December, so I'm hopeful they'll last at least that long!

I had the same experience with my BG 2.0s. I used them for about a year on my daughter and then realized that my prefolds and flats were way easier, way less smelly, and worked better. I just now got rid of the BGss to make room for the new baby's diapers. This time I'm using fitteds (both homemade and purchased) and recycled wool covers to use along with my prefolds. Love those Bummis covers, too!
