Food gets stuck when eating-a bit of tmi

I have a problem and now my daughter(13 mos.) is showing signs of the same issue.

I have to be extremely careful to chew well and eat very slowly or I get a tightening sensation in my chest and nothing including liquids will go down. It's extremely uncomfortable. Sometimes it will self resolve and I can feel the food go down and other times I end up having to go to the bathroom and cough/gag it back out. Everthing I ate is always accompanies with a lot of thick clear mucous/saliva. I also get hiccups if I have a milder episode that self resolves.

Now my daughter (who also has a lot of food allergies) is exhibiting these same symptoms any time she is allowed to self feed.

I have dealt with this on and off since high school and it is mostly a big nuisance so I haven't sought out a doctor on it since it seemed like it would probably be fruitless or some side-effect ridden drug if not some sort of invasive procedure. But now that my daughter is facing the same thing so early, I would like to try to get to the bottom of it.

thoughts?

could it be a hiatal hernia or achalasia?

I would check out eosinophilic esophagitis.

I have the same issue. Sorry, this is an old thread but I was interested in finding out more about it. I ended up in the ER the other night because of it. I hope I don't have eosinophilic esophagitis.

I've had a similar problem although not to this degree. I had what felt like a "lump" in my throat and now matter how hard I swallowed it felt like something was stuck in there. A few times....hours after eating, I would cough or sneeze up food. It would just come flying out. I went to the ENT and he said my esophagus was damaged and that I had silent reflux. I went on meds and it went away...mostly.

I saw the gastroenterologist, and she said I have EE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis), so she sent me to the allergist. We will see what that does. I am thinking I'll probably have to do an elimination diet. Any one have any good links about EE in adults?

My FIL has had to have his esophagus stretched because of something similar. I don't remember what it was called though. His food would feel stuck. It's starting to happen t my husband now too.
