OMG Guess what I found!!!

Let me preface this with:

I was raised by the queen of microwave, frozen entree cooking. I grew up hating food, gagging when ever I tried to eat... anything really!

Then I met my husband, who began to slowly win me over with his ability to cook real food.

I have come leaps and bounds and in the last two years have learned to love food. I love to cook, bake and eat real food.

Anyways, I'm rummaging through my mother's kitchen cupboards looking for a whisk , and I find...

The 1979 edition of joy of cooking!!! :::

Aside from Tomato Aspic (shudder) and a million other gelatin based recipes (creamed fish mold!?! WTF?) this book is a treasure. I'm in love.

I knew how to make a roux, but most of my cooking is throw together taste till it's yummy yk? I don't know any classical cooking because I was never shown it! Baking? Forget it! Last year I tried to do roll out cookies and failed miserably! I may be a foodie, but I am not a baker!

Anyways, I called my Mom up and she laughed at me and said she's never even opened it! She was given this book as a wedding gift.

I knew you ladies would understand my excitment! :

My mom recently gave me her beloved copy of Whole Foods for the Whole Family that she got from LLL in 1981.

Awesome. I LOVE old cookbooks. I recently found a 1957 copy of American Cooking that is all dog-eared and well-loved.

How lucky!

None of my mom's old books survived, after being stored in a garage and/or basement. I had to throw out old crochet patterns, vinyl records, etc, because they were mildewy.

I got that beat I have a 1950 Fanny Farmer Cookbook, 1943 Joy of Cooking, and a 1953 Joy of Cooking. The recipes can be a bit odd but I love the nostalgic stuff. Plus they have wonderful recipes for basics and techniques.

Ooh! Awesome find My grandmother has been in a "take what you want, now, before it's gone" mode - trying to sort out her stuff and give them to people BEFORE she dies : (she hit 80 and decided she didn't have much time left, I guess), anyway, she asked me to go through her cookbooks and take anything that struck me as good... and she had a copy of Julia Child's "the way to cook"!!! I was soooo excited. Of course, as yet I've only made two baguettes, but they seriously turned out so fricking perfect I was completely amazed!

Very cool! I keep my eye out at the goodwill for old cookbooks and have found a couple really awesome ones. There for a little while it seemed like everytime I went in they had some other old-fashioned (or whole wheat) cookbook!!

My mom has a cookbook from the turn of the last century. It details how to clean a squirrel because the glands apparently make it bitter. Also has how to dry clean your own clothes...

What a great find! I have my grandmother's Julia Child (her dinner party cookbook), my mother's Betty Crocker (for awesome muffins), and several others that are nostalgic.

Growing up, we always subscribed to Southern Living (still do!), and we always cooked a lot out of it. I have the 1984 and 1986 editions of the cookbook, just to remind me of my childhood. Just flipping through takes me right back.
