Please walk me through buying prefolds...

I simply don't know where to start and how to pick out what I need.

Infants v Premiums
Chinese v Indian v Organic

Is there a "favored" website to go to? Cost isn't an issue, but I'm cheap by nature...so keep that in mind.

I'm set on covers and know I need a Snappi or two.

My daughter was 8.2 pounds at birth and grew like a weed...if that matters. I'd imagine the newbie will be roughly the same size and grow roughly the same way. Man, I started my daughter on fitteds around 6 months and completely skipped this prefold stuff. Now I'm completely lost!

i love green mountain diapers site. http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/diapers.htm

they've discontinued the infant size though so i would go with the ehatever the next size up from infant is.

indian is softer but chinese is a little more durable. that said i prefer indian (though i own more chinese ) i just saw that gmd has discontinued their chinese though and only has indian.

another good place to get pfs is on the tp here or on diaperswappers

I very nearly ordered from pinstripesandpolkadots.com - their prices were really good in my (admitted) in-experience, lol. I did end up ordering from Green Mountain Diapers though because their reviews were all really good and I love, love, LOVE their "see it on a baby" feature. They have alot of great information on their site and pictures galore, which was important for me because I have no local resources to help me navigate this cloth dipe world that I am so very new to.

Pinstripesandpolkadots all the way

The dark green edge chinese prefolds (infant premiums IIRC) can last from birth through potty training. Of course if I could afford organic I might go with that, never tried them though.

I've ordered my entire stash from littlelions.com

I have a couple dozen *Indian* infant PFs, a couple dozen capri PFs, and a couple dozen infant sized PFs. They have seconds and sales going on which makes them a bargain!

Green Mountain Diapers (link above) are a favourite for their sizes. The orange edge is great for little babies, yellow edge for larger ones or if you are ok with some bulk as they grow into it.

Little Lions has great prices and from them I would get the infant prefolds (seconds if you're on a budget, I hear these have very tiny flaws, if any). Then the capri and premium sizes for when baby gets bigger.

From what I hear indian are softer than chinese, and organic are more expensive but good if you can afford them.

Green Mountain diapers rock! I have two dozen of the orange edge (newborn) and 2 dozen of the yellow edge (early infancy) (for these babies). I also got some preemie prefolds to use as doublers in the diapers. Anyway, they are really great quality for a great price.

Thanks for the suggestions (and links!). Here's my newest issue...I try to buy local whenever possible and Cotton Babies is my closest diapering haven. I'm wondering if I should go with them over GMD. ??

Well from what I hear many/most? prefolds are made in Pakistan, so no matter which store they were shipped to by the manufacturer, they're still imported goods. Most diaper stores online are owned by working moms, so for me personally there is not that much difference. But of course it is up to you - what are you comfortable with?

I just got 3 dozen PFs from Little Lions - prepping them now. They had a really fabulous deal on seconds, and while they are definitely seconds, I am certain they will be entirely useable. I think the premiums in Indian PFs were $17/doz! So, if you want a good deal, I'd check them out.

I hear awesome things about GMD but haven't tried them (couldn't pass up the deal at LL!), so I can't say whether it's worth getting them over something local. But, it's true, all PFs are imported (that I know of). So it's not a huge difference, I think.

Don't forget to check out the MDC WAHM Market for deals. And as others posted, another option is used dipes (or sometimes new dipes if someone overbought, etc) from the Trading Post here.

I started with Green Mountain Diapers. They are good to deal with and their products are good. I was diapering a newborn and toddler when I made the switch to cloth, but I think I bought too many covers. This is just off the top of my head but I would think that for one in diapers this would be sufficient to start

1 or 2 dozen prefold diapers (I went right for red edge and just folded them down in front)
4 covers (DS was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth and did fine going right into the one-size diaper covers, which also fit my toddler incidentally- blueberries and wonderwraps were best for us. I discovered I HATE snaps and LOVE velcro)
4 hemp doublers (small- these can be used at night or during nap time or on outings to suck up extra urine)
4 fleece liners (small- these can be used next to baby's skin to keep him from feeling wet, again in case of an outing or nap time)
2 snappis (unless you're using pins)
1 wet bag for in your diaper bag
1 clothes-hamper liner (big bag)

I also got 2 AIO diapers just for convenience and then fell in love with them and want nothing but AIOs now.

You can hold off on a sprayer since newborn poo can go right in the wash. I started with too may covers and too many prefolds. I'd rather start with less and then get more than start with more and realize that I could have saved money (I too am thrifty by nature).

Diaperpin.com (I think that's the site) has reviews on everything.

So you put an 8 pound newborn in the GMD red edge diapers and didn't have a problem with it fitting?? CRAP. I just bought a bunch of yellow edge (I knew the orange edge would be worthless on the big babies I tend to grow) from GMD and now am wondering if I shouldn't have gotten the red edge so we'd get more use out of them.

I've been wondering about sizing from GMD as well. I cd'ed part time with LO as a newborn and I'm now ready to make the plunge full time.

My guy is about 13 lbs and I'd hate to invest in all yellow edges and not be able to use them for very long. I wondered if it would be okay to get red edges and fold them down to start. Will a folded red edge fit in a small cover?

I'm leaning towards ordering 1 pre-fold of each (yellow and red edge) to check it out before I take the plunge, but if anyone has any insight that would be great!

Don't fret. I've heard lots of moms say that they hated the bulkiness of the red at the newborn stage (think umbilical cord) and they loved having the smaller option. Then later the yellows could become nighttime doublers.

I've actually discovered two amazing concepts: one size fitted diapers and FSOT boards, lol.

I am slowly piecing together a stash of Mother-ease One Size Fitteds with the intent of using my GMD yellow edges as doublers in the MEOS once LO outgrows the yellow-edge. Eventually I will have to order the size 2 in the Thirsties DUO Wraps one way or the other, so that's an expense I've already planned for.

I'm starting small and then will add to accordingly if they work out for us, but I am telling you mamas, I can see how FSOTs can be fiercely addicting!!! :
