Switching care providers....

Yeah...I'm gonna do it! I posted last week about how my midwife is gonna be on vacation for the next two weeks. She is in a practice of 3 midwives but she's the only one who will do a waterbirth and last week she told me she was going to be on vacation for the two weeks leading up to my due date. : So with only one weeks notice I'm trying to find a new care provider!
I did a little looking around online (esp on here) and found a team of 2 midwives who have a freestanding birth center about 15 minutes from me. I called and talked to them about my situation and they said they already had 4 moms booked who were due in august, but that they were willing to take me on as long as I knew that if they were with one of these pre-booked moms I would just have to birth at the original hospital I was with. I think my chances sound pretty good...right?
The catch is that I don't think my insurance is gonna go for it. They are willing to cut their normal fee back to $1800 since there's no real prenatal care involved but that's still quite a chunk of change that I wasn't planning on spending! She said that they would like it upfront but when I told her that wasn't a possibility she said they would work with me. Anyone have any experience in getting insurance to help out and/or what kind of financial arrangements the midwives might offer me?
I HOPE this works!!! It's what I really wanted from the get-go, but made the midwife-in-a-hospital concession for hubby. He's gotten over his fears now but I can't belive I'm having to switch care providers at 38.5 weeks preggo! I'm still mad that I didn't get more notice for a friggin VACATION!!! I went in today for my last scheduled appt with my old MW and to pick up a copy of my records. I didn't say anything since there's a chance I could still give birth there but she just acted like I'd still be sittin here preggo when she got back waiting for her! Maybe she knows something I don't, but I'm not willing to go off her hunch to make sure I get the birth I want. This is my last baby and last time was a spiral of interventions stemming from pre-E. I just want to do everything I can to make this one the birth of my dreams!

Good for you for going for it! Gotta go with what feels right. And her not telling you seems a bit ridiculous. I really hope that you get the birth that you are hoping for

Good for you, Lisa! I think you're making a good choice by at least giving the midwives at the birth center a shot....it may or may not happen but I think you have a better chance of getting you dream birth this way, instead of leaving it in the hands of the hospital midwife who didn't even have the decency to tell you about her vacation until the last minute. :

FWIW....my homebirth midwife usually asks for a lump sum of front, then small monthly payments, and usually collects the remainder by the time of birth. We were unable to do this(come up with the remainder), so we've worked something out with her and are writing her post-dated checks for a certain amount each month until next tax return. Maybe these midwives would do something like that with you also.

Keep up with your insurance. There are things called gap exemptions when you say there isn't a facility like this within what ever amount of radius to where you live that they cover. Someone else may know more about this. I know I got my 1st homebirth a little more than half covered and I'm not sure what will happen this time around, but keep on your insurance about it. Talk to whoever you need to. You would think they would cover a birth center but some don't.

Good luck! It really never is too late to switch care providers. Ok, maybe when you're in transition, but you know what I mean
