Newborn diapering

Thread Starter
I have a random assortment of hand-me-downs and I'm wondering what else I need to get for my newborn (due soon!). So far I have 13 prefolds, 5 fitteds, and 4 wraps. I have plenty of diapers for the later stages (kissaluvs size 1, etc.) so I'm just wondering about those first few weeks. Also, I've heard that you can just fold the prefolds into the wraps and avoid using snappis...any experience with this?

Thanks everybody!

You can just fold them and put them in the covers, but there will be more leaks. In that case, you'd want more covers. I would get a bunch more infant prefolds, and some xsmall covers. If you're doing cloth wipes, you'll want a bunch of those and some type of wipe solution. You'll also need something for dirty dipes, like a pail and pail liner(s) and/or wetbag(s), I have three pail liners that I alternate through.

at the bare minimum a dozen more prefolds. but for a comfort level and to keep the frustration down of having to wash more often during a time of a newborn in the house, I would suggest 2 dozen. 4 would be your minimum covers. I probably would settle in at 6.
cloth wipes are an easy introduction. 24-36 at a minimum should serve you well for a long time. You can add in if needed later.
If you keeping it lean, you might just get a pail, which can be washed out. You can always carry diapers home in a plastic zip lock, but a diaperbag wet bag is a nice option to have. Pail liners are not necessary but some love them. I prefer to simply rinse and wash my with a bit of borax.

There is always room to add in. Having enough correctly sized diapers and covers is the first focus.

I would use pins or snappis to contain and keep covers cleaner.

I think 12 diapers a day is sort of an average usage - some babies will use more, others less. Plus you need to have some to use while the rest are getting washed. Normally the recommended number is 24-36 diapers and 6-8 covers for comfortable, every-other-day washing.

As already mentioned, if you trifold prefolds and lay them into covers you will get more poop on the covers, especially for runny newborn poo. If you're planning to do this I would get some extra covers in your rotation.
