pregnant, weaning due to cramps

I am pregnant and had planned on continuing to breastfeed, but I am having cramps and my doctor and lacatation consultant says we have to wean. DD is 14 months. I have stuggled with this on every emotional level. We are down to only nursing to sleep at night- from 6 nursings a day. It has been two weeks from hell!!!! She went from being a very happy baby to whinny/fussy. I feel guilty for getting pregnant, then I feel guilty for being negative about being pregnant. Someone please tell me that we will get through this and that she will return to being happy. I just want to give in and let her nurse, but if I miscarry I won't forgive myself.

How far along are you? I cramped a lot in the beginning of this pregnancy, from 4-8 weeks, and I wasn't nursing. I'd get a second (or third) opinion. Have you called your local LLL?

I am 7weeks and I only cramp when I breasfeed. I know about the contracting uterus and all, but these are bad. They did an internal ultrasound and said I need to quit. I talked with an LLL person and my normal lacatation consultant, at first they just said to cut back, then I talked with them again and they said that I need to focus on my pregnancy and wean. Everything I read said it should be fine, I guess I'm just one of those people who it doesn't work for. My Aunt breastfeed through 4 of her pregnancys, but has also said that I need to stop. She said back then, it just wasn't talked about and there was no research. I am so sad!

I breastfed my last DS until my last month, he was about 15 months. When I started having contractions I had to stop nursing him on my nipple and switched him to suckling on the side of my breast.

I'm sorry mamma. DD weaned early (15 mos) too. We replaced that bonding with backrubs and snuggles, and although it was tough initially, we made it and now she's happy, intelligent, and very healthy.
