Wow, this is so sad. I would have refused to leave. I can't believe how many people think that BFing in public is inconsiderate of others. Last I checked, looking away wasn't that difficult!

Isn't it rude to stare at a person anyway? Ugh

If breastfeeding is so inconsiderate, shouldn't we take the hungry infant into consideration?

Hampton Roads is the only place I've ever encountered negative reactions to NIP. (Then again, it's also the only place I've ever lived where people in the rest of the state, upon learning where I lived, reflexively apologized and promised me not everywhere was the same!)

Being that CHKD is an Episcopal hospital, I'm darn tempted to write a letter to the bishop.

All I can say is "wow"..

I lived in Virginia Beach for a long tme. I never had a problem breastfeeding either of my older two. I HAVE breastfed in Childrens' Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) when my oldest had to have reconstructive plastic surgery after an accident, and noone said anything bad to me about it (this was in 2006). The nurses supported me and everything (and I wasn't nursing an infant. I was nursing a 15 month old! I feel so bad for the mother in the story. I feel even more bad that a hospital that I thought did awesome while we were there, would do this. :

I think that security guard needs a lesson or 2 on the law!

WV doesn't have a law, does VA?

Yes.

Va. Code Ann. §2.2-1147.1, 2002
Virginia House Bill # 1264, 2002

Right to breast-feed

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a woman may breast-feed her child at any location where that woman would otherwise be allowed on property that is owned, leased or controlled by the Commonwealth as defined in § 2.2-1147.

Va. Code Ann. § 18.2-387
1994 Va. ALS 398; 1994 Va. Acts 398; 1994 Va. Ch. 398; 1994 Va. HB 1188

Section 18.2-387 Indecent Exposure
Every person who intentionally makes an obscene display or exposure of his person, or the private parts thereof, in any public place, or in any place where others are present, or procures another to so expose himself, shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. No person shall be deemed to be in violation of this section for breastfeeding a child in any public place or any place where others are present

The hospital says it supports breastfeeding.

NO, you don't! But harrassing women and treating it like something shameful and different and all that, you are undermining it!

Terrible. Good for the mama speaking up so nicely.
