Some good news : )

Hi all,
When my youngest turned 18 months old, we were told that his front 4 teeth were decaying and that he'd have to have caps put on
Our dentist is great and we chose to monitor the teeth closely instead.
We gave up virtually all juice (we do some watered juice rarely or fresh vegetable juice) and all dried fruits. No candy, no sugary snacks. Lots of green stuff, fresh fruit and water.
I did NOT stop night-nursing.
He is now 30 months old and the decayed spots are harder and have not progressed : ) We are using an electric Oral B toothbrush to thoroughly brush his teeth at night (really, we have only done it really well once a day). I rub a little baking soda into those teeth after the brushing.
Again, I have not stopped the night-nursing although he has stopped doing it so much at night...maybe 1 time and then once again early morning.
I feel happy because I do not think it's the breast milk that caused his decay. In our case, it truly was the sugary stuff and not brushing regulary when he was infant.
Hope this info can help other
Mel.

I should have mentioned that we went through this with my first too.
But he too made it through losing those bad front 4 teeth naturally....the dentist wanted to cap them and we didn't. We opted to maintain.
I am happy to report that all four of those baby teeth are tucked away in a corner of my lingerie drawer and my 8 yr old has four beautiful adult teeth in their place.

I can't tell you how happy this post makes me. We are three days into realizing our son has decay on front teeth and feel overwhelmed and nervous and stressed. Sometimes I feel like just saying, forget it - and just getting the cavities filled. Our biggest concern is that the teeth will abscess and it will somehow impact the permanent teeth (as per our dentist's dire warnings). It is just so hard to know when to "wait and see" and when things have gotten too dire to wait and see. Anyway, so great to read success stories! Helps a lot!
(p.s. Hmm, I just realized that I am about nine months late replying to this, but oh well. I stilllll am glad things worked for you and wanted to thank you for the encouraging post, even if I am little later than others in the response!)
