Dirty diapers smell like vinegar?

My dd is 1 week old. Nusring like a champ. Plenty of mustardy seedy poops. But she has a really red rash on her bum and her dirty dipes stink like vinegar.

Any ideas? My midwife mentioned probiotics, anyone else have any ideas? I wouldn't care except for the rash.

I see you CD, you're not using Charlie's Soap as laundry detergent are you? DS had a really nasty burn/rash from Charlie's Soap (or whatever it does to the dipes) that warranted 3 medical visits! Plus, I noticed that the dipes smelled like vinegar also. We used Charlie's and on the second day that ugly rash/burn appeared.

I actually went to sposies when the rash occurred. I used a scented detergent as a last resort. I have been washing the dipes and wipes in HOT water since with no detergent actually. But with 3 days of sposies.. No change.

I don't know if the smell & the rash are related. I've often found ds' poops smell vinegary but he's never had a problem with rashes. I thought it was the normal smell.

I would defenetely look into your own diet,
as anything that you eat gets into the milk.

My DD has the same issues after I eat anything acidic.
I have to be really careful how much and how often
I eat things just to name few:

oranges
orange juice
sour cabage (sour kraut)
sour cucumbers (dill pickles.. or any other pickes to be exact)
anything with vinegar in it
any sour fruits
anything close to lemonade or lemon

but also interestingly enough:
tomatoes
strawberries

My tactic was to avoid all of those things when she was tinny
but considering that we are nursing fr 4 years now I learned
how much of what and how often I could get away withut making
her suffer.

For the longest time I had to really stay clear from citrus fruits
and orange juice or lemonade as it would have big impact.

I love sourkraut in cooked or fresh form and I used to love a lot
of it but I just had to cut entirely as this is very big no no.

OTHER TIPS:

I would defenetely do some close watching how she behaves after
you eat those things and how she behaves when you avoid them
for couple of days or after her rash clears.

as to rash: whenever you see the rash and especially when you
suspect acidity I would wash her bottom very often during the day
but WITHOUT any soap. Just warm water and cloth.. over a
little container but not just dump.. I mean really rinse it whit water
like in a splashing manner to rinse all acidic urine off.

Then really good drying with towel and then some more drying.. :-)
and then I would apply some desitin.. gently till it all clears
and then would watch to see how she reacts to foods in your diet...

OTHER THOUGHT:
If your dd is a nursing champ as she is - bravo! she might
just load on lactaid acid in milk - especially in the first milk
so one trick to avoid this is to let her nurse on one breast as long
as possible to avoid loading on first milk and enjoying the hind milk
that is less acid containing. I am not an expert on that though
and I might be talking nonsense.. but do your diet first and
if it won't work ask the forum about the first and hind milk
acidity issues so you will get tons of issue from the experts.
in any case doing one breast as long as you can is always good
idea to avoid future reflux also caused by acid.

PROBIOTIC THOUGHT:
I like them but I would be carefu not to do them too early as
however safe they might seem and probably are, after all
those are millions of bacterias that you put into your baby body
so who knows.. best way is to stay with naure without extra
aids but if you must do what you feel is right.
I would believe that pro biotics would help to some degree
but then again it is most important to find a cause and remove it
isn't it? because you might just play catch if not.

if you will go with probiotics then be very careful not to give
baby probiotics in a powder forms as is because she might chocke on it
it is huge chocking hazard. I think that there is an instruction on
how to do it safely as in dissolving in water or something.

Good luck and congrats!

I think you can pass probiotics through breastmilk. Nursing moms can eat lots of yogurt and kefir.

Today to eat I had

1 orange
water
green tea with asain pear juice
1 apple juice (4 oz)
4 banana nut muffins
1 black cherry yogurt
cheddar pasta w/ broccoli, carrots and chicken

I have cut out milk and limit myself to one 4 oz serving of any juice.

I am not seeing what it is I could be eating to bother her. I think I am not changing her enough, but honestly to change her everytime she goes would be borderline impossible. LOL I only nurse her one side at a time until completely empty or when she pops off. If she fusses I offer the other breast. Her poops are seedy and bright mustardy yellow.

I think it may be that I am not changing enough. I am going to take her in the bath with me in a few.

I am shy about Desitin, I and my first had a severe allergy to it. It literally burnt skin off of us. Vaseline seems to be ok, but not help really.

I feel so bad, although she doesn't seem too bothered by it really.

It won't do any good to just cut out milk, you would need to eliminate dairy in total for 4-6 weeks to see a difference if it's a dairy reaction. But I would say the orange, the apple juice and the green tea could all be irritants.

ok... I will go completely to water then to drink.

Not sure what fruits are ok? I'm not sure what food is ok? I am limited on budget too. I can't afford milk subsitutes.

I have already lost a large amount of weight 1 week PP and am afraid I am not getting enough calories as it is.

Do eggs count as dairy?

No butter, yogurt, milk, ice cream, then?

Do you think you may have yeast/thrush issues possibly? Both DS and I have lots of food allergies and we have been on a long road to "normal" poop, and the one weird thing that remains is the vinegar smell. My theory right now is that it is yeast-caused. DS still has a coated tongue and gets a yeasty rash if he sits in a dirty diaper for any period of time, like in the carseat. He's also older (almost 16 months), so I try to get him to drink a sip or two of water kefir for the probiotic benefit every day and we seem to have more normal smelling poops if I've been able to get it into him in the previous few days.
