Is it safe to use artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?
Expert Answers
Lori Wolfe, genetic counselor
Yes, most women can safely ingest the three main types of artificial sweeteners used in the United States: aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal), sucralose (Splenda), and saccharin (Sweet’NLow). These sugar substitutes are used in many different types of food and drink.
One exception is moms-to-be who have a genetic disease called phenylketonuria, or PKU. These moms need to avoid aspartame completely because PKU prevents them from breaking down the phenylalanine in their diet.
If they don't follow a specific diet, the phenylalanine builds up in their bodies, causing their baby to be mentally retarded. Fortunately, thanks to FDA-mandated labeling of products containing aspartame, avoiding it is relatively easy for expectant moms with PKU.
Saccharin, one of the first artificial sweeteners, is much less common today than it once was. Saccharin has not been shown to cause birth defects.
