Catholic Mamas- August 2009 - Page 2

Hi all! I'm back from my almost 2 week vacation and it was so wonderful! And for those who wished me well, my first triathlon went great. I completed it in 1hour and 51 minutes and felt just fabulous afterward! What a great experience. And my mom did great too - she finished in about 2 1/2 hours.

So this past sunday was our first sunday back at our usual church after summer break. We had a cookout/crab feast for our priest's birthday. Very fun!

Jest - I'm definately praying for your friend. My sister just went through that less than a year ago and it has been the most painful experience!

Annie - congrats for hubby's new job! I hope it works out to be a great fit for your family.

Funny thing about veiling - I don't feel obligated to do it a mass, though I have occasionally felt that it would be nice. But when I go to a synagogue I do feel very impressed upon to cover my head in some way. Even in a reform synagogue! Interesting, huh? It makes me think that I might try some subtle ways to cover my head at mass sometime and see how it makes me feel. But if I am very obvious about it I will definately draw much attention to myself as my community is quite liberal and I wouldn't want to make a big issue of it.

Welcome to all newcomers, lurkers, and returner's!
gotta run, laundry to do!

Does anyone know any good reading about joining the Catholic church? I know the history, I need to know the "now" of the church.

JustVanessa, have you read any of Scott Hahn's stuff? His book "Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism" may be really helpful to you on your own journey to the Church.

From the book description on Amazon: "The well-known and very popular Catholic couple, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, have been constantly travelling and speaking all over North America for the last few years about their conversion to the Catholic Church. Now these two outstanding Catholic apologists tell in their own words about the incredible spiritual journey that led them to embrace Catholicism. Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister, the top student in his seminary class, a brilliant Scripture scholar, and militantly anti-Catholic ... until he reluctantly began to discover that his "enemy" had all the right answers. Kimberly, also a top-notch theology student in the seminary, is the daughter of a well-known Protestant minister, and went through a tremendous "dark night of the soul" after Scott converted to Catholicism.

Their conversion story and love for the Church has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of lukewarm Catholics and brought them back into an active participation in the Church. They have also influenced countless conversions to Catholicism among their friends and others who have heard their powerful testimony.

Written with simplicity, charity, grace and wit, the Hahns' deep love and knowledge of Christ and of Scripture is evident and contagious throughout their story. Their love of truth and of neighbor is equally evident, and their theological focus on the great importance of the family, both biological and spiritual, will be a source of inspiration for all readers."

When I was pondering conversion, I read "Why Do Catholics Do That" and "Catholic Q&A". I found those very helpful.

Annabelle, congratulations!

Thank you to those who are praying or my friend.

This weekend I saw Father Corapi speak at a conference. It is my third time seeing him speak "live". What an incredibly powerful speaker he is...and very moving.
