Should I be concerned about how many eggs I eat?

So, I am pregnant and nursing a toddler, and always hungry. We're on a tight budget but we eat healthy food, and we have chickens--so one thing we always have in surplus is eggs.

I feel like eggs have a bad rep because of cholesterol, but I'm wondering how big of a concern that really is. Does anyone with a nutrition background and know-how know of a source I can rely on as a guide of how many eggs I can be eating per day?

Eggs are a great source of protein and healthy fats - particularly if you're raising them yourself. There is no limit to the number of eggs you can/should eat in a day other than your own appetite for them. So long as the hens are eating a healthy diet. Protein and fat are both crucial to proper fetal development, and if your body is telling you to get that from eggs, then I'd listen.

Eggs are nature's perfect food, providing excellent protein, the gamut of nutrients and important fatty acids that contribute to the health of the brain and nervous system. Americans had less heart disease when they ate more eggs. Egg substitutes cause rapid death in test animals.

I'm with Cristeen, I say eat away! With you being pregnant and nursing, they are a great source of protein (you need all the protein you can get) and healthy fats.

I'm also with Cristeen!

The source of the eggs is way more important than how many you eat. Try to find eggs that ran around someone's property and ate minimal commercial feed (preferably organic feed but that can be hard to find). Those will be the healthiest eggs.

ITA with PP...eat away.

I don't limit egg consumption for me or for my kids. I usually eat two a day, but occasionally have a third. DS2 has many days when he doesn't eat any...but he's also been known to eat three in a day. I figure if he wants that many, he probably needs them. I don't worry about cholesterol, as I've never believed that ingested cholesterol is an issue.
