Hi,
Has anyone bought/used a placenta encapsulation kit? I just read about one, it costs $75. I want to know if its easy?
Thanks
Rebecca

We aren't going to use a kit--my midwife has been doing this for years. First we steam the placenta (just with our regular kitchen pots and a steamer basket), then we'll dry it in a dehydrator (I think she said they'll cut it into strips of about equal size, you can also do it in the oven but she said some ovens don't go quite as low heat-wise as a dehydrator so you have to really watch it to prevent charring), grind it up, and put it in capsules. I can get the capsules at my health food store and you can either buy a capsule machine or if you get the "0" capsules a regular drinking straw fits perfectly in there and makes it easy to fill them. My midwife will probably just take care of the steaming/dehydrating for me after the birth so a pretty good deal for me

I'm just blending mine up b/c I'm lazy....
but I don't know if a kit is necessary. I like this explanation of how to do it. I've seen other instrucitons for using an oven instead of a dehydrator too.
I've never encapsulated placenta but I have packed a lot of capsules in my life and I don't think that part of the kit is worth it. Your pharmacy can order empty capsules for less than $10 (or order them online). Then you just make a little pile of the powder on a hard flat surface and tap the longer end of the capsule into it until it won't pick up anymore powder, put the other side on and do the next one... you don't need a filler/tamper device. The empty capsules are shaped to pick up and hold the powder and to make equally-filled capsules (wait, let me say I have never used the capsules from healthfood stores, I would assume they are also designed to make this easy but I guess I don't know). This part is easy for sure, a little time-consuming but easy.
To me the hard part seems to be the steaming/dehydrating/blending steps which you can get for free online.
