I gotta say the sculpter probably hasn't seen a baby breastfeed! I can just imagine those babies pushing back against her hands on their heads!

Look at her great posture!

What's up with this part?

“Hopefully, my sculpture inspires an increase of wetnurses to assist women who have concerns about mastitis, or passing HIV to their infant,” said artist Daniel Edwards in his Connecticut studio where the Jolie statue currently resides.
An increase of wetnurses for women who are concerned about mastitis? What an odd goal.

Is this the guy who did Ms. Spears giving birth?

The sculptor has not clue about breastfeeding, much less to breastfeeding twins, gravity and babies. In that position, they babies probably don't latch well, be immobile and weigh no more that 2 pound each.LOL

So... what do you all think about a public statue (doesn't have to be this one) of a Mama nursing where the artist has got the latch/hold all wrong? I would prefer to see something with a realistic latch and hold!

But if the choice was a statue (realistic but with an unrealistic latch or hold) or nothing, I'm not sure what I'd pick. Ideas?

It is unrealistic. I nursed twins. You cannot hold them like that. And who breastfeeds naked sitting up with no support for their twins' bodies or heads. Plus the latch is all wrong.

This just seems to make something beautiful and life-giving into something sensational and sexual.

yup.

The statue looks silly to me and why Angelina Jolie?
I'm all for a BF statue, a realistic one that is.

I don't know, I like it. Realistic or no, we have to start somewhere, and I think that the statue is a good way to get conversation going, and to normalize breastfeeding in public.

I understand the "it's not realistic!" comments, but don't understand the s.

I'd definitely rather have a somewhat inaccurate statue than no statue at all.

Yup. I knew as soon as I read the thread title that it would be. He seems to just want publicity, and I guess doing "shocking" statues of celebrities is his MO.

The only realistic past may well be the lines in her face that make her look tired. Anyone else feel the instinctive need to arch your back and take a breath? Those babies are going to suffocate... odd altogether

What a flat tummy for having such tiny babies!

This sculpture reminds me of the statue of Brittney Spears giving birth on all 4s- when in fact she had a c/s!

But for overall Lactivism, I think this sculpture is a good start. It's showing breastfeeding as something normal and healthy and worthy of art, even if the details are completely unrealistic. It's showing breastfeeding twins as being attainable.

I could see somebody walking away from that sculpture with the vague thought "twins can be breastfed." and then carrying that thought with them several years, until they have their own kids. I can't imagine any expectant or new mother actually staring at the statue trying to learn proper breastfeeding techniques!

Does anybody know if Angelina breastfed the twins for real, if she's still nursing them, or how long she nursed them for?

Good point!

I have a friend who is an IBCLC. She often tells me that she feels that many of the breastfeeding issues she sees are because moms don't see breastfeeding much at all, and model feeding their babies from the breast as you would feed a baby from a bottle. That's what I was thinking of when I first saw the statue - but I like the 'twins can be breastfed' message! Maybe next time he'll get the hold/latch right!

I don't know how long she BFed or if she still is, but there was a photo (that I guess Brad took) of her BFing on the cover of some magazine not long after the twins were born.

ETA: Here is the picture.

I believe she BFed her twins for about 3 months, then gave up due to exhaustion / losing too much weight.

why does he have to make a mokery of scared moments in a womans life? I don't get it. Taking a deeply personal moment and turning it into bad satire art? Lame.
