Mastitis every month

I am at my wits end, not willing to wean over it, mind you, but sick of this happening.

Starting at the 4 month mark with every baby, I have gotten mastitis every 4-5 weeks. I nursed DD1 for 3 years and DD2 for 2 years, and DS is almost 6 months (and I am trying to get over case of mastitis #3 since he was born). I didn't get mastitis at all when I was nursing DD1 while pregnant with DD2 (so from when DD1 was 14 months to 22 months).

What gives?? Has this happened to anyone else?

It is not a hormonal cyclical thing as far as I can tell since it starts at 4 months and I didn't get AF back until DD1 was 12 months and DD2 was 15 months. DD1 had her throat cultured to see if she was a carrier of strep during a particularly awful bilateral case when I was nearly hospitalized. She wasn't a carrier of anything. My milk has never been cultured as my doctors don't ever ask to see me - I just tell them my symptoms over the phone and they call in antibiotics (and encourage me to wean once the baby is over a year ). I try not to take the antibiotics - I only do it if I'm not feeling better on my own after 2-3 days.

I believe it is related to oversupply but I have never been able to fix that. I pump each morning since I wake up so full and get 10-12 ounces. If I don't pump, I never stop feeling full throughout the day (I have let this go on for weeks) and I feel like that is just a huge set-up for mastitis.

Any ideas? Or anyone else that has gone through this so at least I don't feel like the only person this has ever happened to? I am just so frustrated. I love nursing but this is getting old.

Is it on one side or both? Are you using properly fitted flanges when you pump? Have you tried lecithin?

Taking supplemental magnesium can reduce oversupply. It has helped for me! I use Natural Calm.

Ugh! Mastitis is awful

That is such a bummer! I had 6 cases of mastitis with DD1. Started when she was 4 months and went on till she weaned at 14 mos. it was especially troublesome because a bad case that I needed 2 courses of antibiotics for led to C. Diff (a nasty intestinal infection caused by the antibiotics). So after having that for almost a year I can't take antibiotics unless it's dire. With DD2 I got it before she was even 6 weeks and I was petrified I was going to have a repeat of the first time. I read on kellymom about lecithin. I take the maximum amount and I haven't gotten a full blown case since then and DD2 is 16 mos. I do get plugged ducts sometimes but can always take care of them before they progress. Here are the things that work for me for prevention and treating early cases:
I stopped wearing ANY bras or tight fitting tops.
I take lecithin daily (1200 mg 3x day I think it is)
I never pump anymore. I think with DD1 the pumping increased my supply but was less efficient at removing the milk, leading to problems.
I always switch positions. At night of course I just side lay to nurse so during the day I switch between cradle hold and football hold. I think this drains different areas better.
When I do get a sore area that feels like a plugged duct I use a heating pad turned on high ALL night long. I keep it on there as much as I can stand without burning my skin. Usually a night or 2 of this is all it takes.
Good luck... I know how awful it is!

I'm there with you. DD is 6 months old now and I just got my 5th case of it.
It's a total drag. Doctor seems to think it's one particular duct which doesn't drain properly. I used to think it was over supply but lately my supply has leveled out and I still came down with it. I haven't found anything besides antibiotics that helps (I'll look into the lecithin though). I just wanted you to know you're not alone! Hugs (gentle ones though
