Hang in there!
I tried a Maya Wrap in the early days with my second child, and as I recall it just felt like miles and miles of unyielding fabric, and it went nowhere. That was when someone lent me a Moby, which although is not the best carrier long term, is kind of magical for a newborn. Also, an Asian carrier like a babyhawk is in my experience a better bet for a newborn than a Maya Wrap. It's just more manageable, you don't lose the baby entirely within the fabric.
That having been said what you have is a great carrier for the next stage, when your little one bulks up a little... is there a babywearing group in your area at all where you might find one to 'borrow' for a short time to get into the babywearing groove?
