History of lactivism on Katie Allison Granju's blog

This post by Katie Allison Granju offers a thought-provoking analysis of the history of breastfeeding advocacy, comparing its development to the stages of the women's movement and arguing that some of the current backlash against "breastfeeding zealots" stems from ignorance of how much positive change the movement has already wrought. Well worth a careful read.

Very interesting - thanks for posting.

I love her conclusion
Quote:
we need to work together toward a breastfeeding culture, instead of worrying so much about how any single mother decides to feed her own baby. But while we must be sensitive, kind and respectful of individual choices, we can't let that sensitivity and common courtesy impede big-picture advocacy. It's a tricky balance, and one we have not yet achieved. But I am an optimist, and I think we can figure this out, together.

Awesome article, thanks for sharing. Interesting how she ties the current lactivist movement to the development of the internet.

This is a wonderful blog post! If I hadn't posted something "breastfeeding" all week last week on Facebook, I'd be linking this today! I think I should wait awhile before linking to this though ... I'm sure some of my friends are tired of the breastfeeding links!

Very thoughtful and thought-provoking, I think she touches on several of the extended discussion threads we've had here about lactivism, activism, and priorities for lactivists.
