I have a couple of leafy plants here, and the bottom leaves turn yellow, then brown, and then decompose into the soil. It's happened on my lettuce and swiss chard, when the plants were quite large and I assume the bottom leaves were older and getting shaded out. Does that sound normal?

It's also happening on my comfrey plants, but with those, I'm finding lots of webby stuff (like spider webs) on the leaves that are quite brown. There seem to be quite a few spiders in there. I'm hoping it's just that the old leaves are rotting and attracting bugs, which attract the spiders, but the web looks something like tent caterpillar webbing, so it's making me nervous. I haven't been doing any cutting on the comfrey plant, and I just went in this afternoon and cut out everything that was yellow or brown, and any whole stems that had very many brown leaves on them. Originally, I was hoping to use the leaves as mulch in my garden, but if they have some kind of bug, I don't want to bring them over.

Any thoughts? I'm feeling like a first time parent here with my garden.
