I had posted a response on the living off the grid forum....thought I might post it here....I never thought of sharing it before, but realized I might not be the only one that was willing to use this

Moss....I was introduced to the idea of moss diapers by Doug Elliot. He lives near me and is a great man to hang with! Really a lot of fun. He has opened his home to our local HS group. He is a lot of fun, and you can learn so much from him! Anyway, I was so open to the idea, and thought I'd give it a shot. So he gave me my first bag of moss to get started that had been from his son, and told me where to harvest more! The moss holds EXTREMELY well. AMAZING amounts of pee. It is renewable and biodegradable LOL I even picked a consistent dumping area for the pee moss in my yard and some replanted! LOL I did lay it in a prefold and kindof folded it inside, my dd was a very heavy wetter and in the past i'd have to double diaper or use doublers but have also used it with a biodegradable liner and no flat....you really dont need to use anything besides a wrap type cover with it. I did the lazier way most often b/c I was too busy to sift for pine needles etc. So, you just gather it, dry it it the sun, look through it for any pine needles, etc, gather it into a container near your diaper area (I had a glass canister thingy) Line each dipe cover, through in compost or outside when done. If it had poop Id bury it. SUPER easy and FREE The link to his site is below.....Oh maybe we can start a moss diapering movement LOL. Oh and my friend coined the line "Jenn, I think she needs a change, she's smelling a little mossy" LOL!

That's amazing! I love the idea!

But honestly it's a little too innovative for me though! I'm doing PFs with this babe and that's a huge improvement in itself!

Wow, that's pretty cool. The ultimate in both frugality and ecologically sound diapering!! If sphagnum could grow out here I'd try it for sure.

i was recently having conversation with an anthropologist who worked with different indigenous tribes in alaska. they diaper exclusively with moss. as an interesting aside, they have to completely potty train by 6 months (they say this is the best time- if you miss your window you're stuck until baby is around 2!) because it gets so cold that babies will freeze to death if they are sleeping in wet diapers. pretty crazy!

Just as an FYI: Insects live in moss, so if you are planning on using it near your skin, you need to microwave it or freeze it first before drying it, or you run the risk of being bitten by chiggers, mites, spiders, etc.

HTH!

ITA - Not something I'd be into anyway, but I'd be careful.

Sphagnum Moss
Sphagnum moss is suitable for use in parts of riparian, pondside, terrestrial and fossorial enclosures. It is moistened and kept damp to provide a microclimate of higher humidity. There have been some reports of animal keepers developing serious fungal infections from contact with spore-infected sphagnum moss. Moss should be periodically thoroughly dried out. It can be baked in a 250ÂşF (121ÂşC) for one hour.
