Monday my son starts kindg. and I'm going to walk him to his classroom and meet the teacher. I know this can't continue and I'll need to drop him off at the front entrance in the car line like everyone else. However, I'm concerned about how well little 5 yr olds can reliably and safely make their way to class on their own. I have never left him to wander on his own in a public building, including church. How did you all handle this transition and does anyone else have this concern?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

After the 1st day the kids will know where they are going. probably on the 1st day the class will get a tour of the school. They will be going places, the gym , the library, the office etc on a regular basis. There will be staff around to make sure kids get to where they are going. Many times the kindy rooms are down a seperate hallway from the rest of the school. He will be fine.
Congrats on the first day of school.

we walked our dd to her classroom like the first week and will likely do the same this year (1st grade) but then she was totally ready to do it on her own. Our child attends a fairly small charter school and the teachers and staff do a great job of helping to make sure all the kids go to where they need to be especially the little ones. Still it was a bittersweet moment the day she insisted on going to her classroom by herself.

For us this is a much bigger safety issue than for most children entering Kindergarten. If I dropped ds off at the front in the car line like all the other kids he would likely A) dart in front of a car/bus and get hit, B) wander into the school and out another door, C) wander into a random room and hide or D) totally freak with all the noise and commotion and the whole school day would be ruined.
This year (Kindergarten) I will walk him to his room and drop him off for probably the first few weeks. If he's doing okay with that I'll walk him into the building and up the stairs where his aid will meet him. Then we'll try me walking him into the building and the aid meeting him. Then, eventually (whether it's this year or not- I don't know), we will transition to the aid meeting ds and my car. But ds is to be under the direct supervision of an adult EVERY minute.
