Truly newborn size diaper covers

It's been a while since I did this cloth diapering lark and now I have another due in January. I've plenty of prefolds, they held up really well over the years. I tend to have quite small babies, around 6 pounds and my memory of last time is most of the small and even xs covers I got were quite big on her.

What covers do you recommend for a true newborn fit of around 6 pounds? Would the Bummis super whisper be an option? I am interested in wool options too, if there is something available. Obviously I'm a bit out of the loop about options available for the last 4 years or so!

Thirsties make a new kind called the Duo. I've never used them, but I've heard others say that the size 1 snaps down smaller than the Thirsties x-small.

The tiniest newborn wraps I've seen are the newborn Proraps. My kiddos were 7 1/2 pounds, 6 1/2 pounds, and just under 5 pounds when I brought each of them home, and the Proraps were the only covers that genuinely fit at that size. They don't last, though-- my kids were out of them by 9 pounds.

The Bummis newborn is a bit bigger than the Proraps, but still a nice fit on a smaller baby.

I agree with the proraps. One of my girls is 6 pounds, 6 ounces and the other is 6 pounds 1 ounce and both are 19 3/4 inches long and they are still wearing the preemie size prorap. The xsmall thirsties are HUGE on them, there's no way they could wear them. Even the newborn size prorap is still quite big on them, but they are very long and have little skinny legs. All of the other "newborn" size covers we bought to try look huge too.

I don't think I'd want to use the proraps long term, but they are great for this early stage because they are cheap and do the job well.

the swaddlebees abc wrap is an excellent option...the newborn size is truly newborn. very similar in feel to the BSWW. it was my favorite newborn cover, along with loveybums wool covers.

I've heard that the newborn Bummis Super Brights are tiny, a little smaller than the Super Whisper Wraps and definitely smaller than the XS Thirsties.

I liked the newborn size dappis. They never leaked and fit my baby's chicken legs really well- she started wearing them right away at 6 1/2 lbs.

Bummis super brights and proraps both fit my newborn well when she was born (7lbs, 5 oz) and she has pretty much grown out of them at 9 lbs 5 oz.

I agree with the preemie Prorap suggestion. For a 6 pounder, any of the newborn sizes will be too big. I would look for preemie wraps.

The Imse Vimse preemie and newborn ones are really small too.

Thanks for the great info, just what I was after. I'll check into all of them. Thankfully I still have a few months to get things together. I'm really looking forward to diapering a newborn again. I remember they go through so many diapers and I love to think of sparing the landfill of all those disposables. Some of these prefolds will be on to their third baby! Cheers

Our bummis superbrites seem about half the size of the thirsties extra smalls so they are great at first. The thirsties didnt take long to fit, but they were huge the first week or so, so I was glad to have the bummis. I just got the loveybums wool pull on cover in the newborn size and its TINY! She's already almost too big, but Im buying more for the next bub as they are fantastic and SO cute!
