Uav?

Thread Starter
Lately I've seen people using the abbreviation "UAV" (I think it is) as a negative term. What does it stand for?
Name calling is against the rules. Some people use "UAV" or "User Agreement Violation" in order to express they are not calling names.

ummm - but they still are.

LOL

ROTFLMAO!!!!

I always thought that when people said something like that, such as "My husband is a UAV!!" that they meant "My husband is someone who has violated the agreement of our relationship" (as in done something/acted some way that is really bad ) not "my husband is a (*#((*Q#$"!!!!!"

Isn't calling someone a UAV considered name calling? Wouldn't it be better and more in line with the rule against namecalling to just say "I am angry at my husband for trampling on my feelings and ignoring my opinion" than to say "My husband is being a UAV"?

I'm still pretty new, but I've read the board rules, and I think that if namecalling is not allowed, that would include "UAV", too, wouldn't it?

exactly. I wrote my reply kind of tongue in cheek above, but this is exactly how I feel when I see womeone write "UAV" in place of name calling.....

I find this interesting, because I don't allow my children to dance around my rules. I expect them to obey them. When I tell them, "Don't touch the stove", I won't give them a pass because they use a wooden spoon to touch the stove, you know?

Once when I was having a tantrum for doing something similar (breaking the spirit of the rule) my mother told me she hopes I have at least one kid like me. :

I find it interesting that a message board that has so many rules doesn't really seem to be applying them to something as basic as "We don't insult people".

You are right. It hasn't been something we have been able to address but will likely be looked at.

Oh Thanks A lot!
"stomps foot and goes to the corner to pout."

thank you! It's been something that's been bothering me for a very long time.

Eh, I don't know. I see both sides. However, it's weird to me that as adults we would have to completely act like things are all roses and sunshine in life when the facts are that people can be UAVs in life. Is it a UAV to say someone is being rude or unkind? It would seem to me that is just a nicer way of saying they are being a jerk.

I don't have a problem with someone saying, "My sister was rude to me and hurt my feelings" or "My neighbor said something mean to me today". That's completely different than, "My sister is a jerk" or "My neighbor is catty and evil." As I said before, we don't allow mean name calling in our home, even if it's something silly and made up.

Not to mention that as I read it, the first is okay, but the second is against the rules.

Yes well I don't have the same rules in my home as you do. I agree with the poster you are quoting and think as adults we should be able to call someone a jerk or an idiot. Now I can see calling someone something profane.. or directly calling a member a name... but I see no problem at all with say calling my ex my daughter's UAV. Cause you know what.. that is what he is.

Since this board is for adults we do ask people to come up with more constructive methods of dealing with conflict than name calling.

While we don't expect things to be all roses and sunshine we do ask people to treat others as they would like to be treated, even if they are not here.

I understand it can be difficult to avoid name calling in some situations in which people are dealing with a lot of hurt and anger but it is in the rules for this community and something we ask of our members.

Not to be a nag, but is it a UAV to say that someone is unkind or rude?

Not unless you were telling another poster they are rude.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm........well then why is it okay to say someone who is not a poster is rude? Kind of muddy waters don't you think? It's hard to follow rules when they are kind of blurry. I am not questioning their existance at all, just noting that it's not entirely clear to understand what's acceptable and not acceptable.

Generally "unkind" or "rude" are addressing behavior not the actual person. To direct that to another member would be "taking issue" and should really be taken to pm rather than dragged out on the boards.
