Some CD Questions:

Thread Starter
Hi! I have been cloth diapering (and loving it!) for 2-3 weeks now and have accumulated a few questions:

* What makes a rash cream CD safe or not safe? Is burts bees ok?
* How do you decide what a rash is caused by?
* How often should I strip my diapers?
* Is it better to snappi on a prefold and then cover? or just fold & cover?
* How do you decide what detergent to use?

TIA!

techinally all rash ointment s are fine but some will stain more and some contain fish oils whose smell will linger even after washing. bb will be fine we used it and it washed out fine.
Rashs if they stick around and flare up fast look diffrent from just the occasional little redness, deductive work will often help give an answer to cause. but like red ringy rashes especially ones that seem to orginate near there anus often a food allergy rash.. Ones from material are often raised and splochy and often include both bum and tummy yeasty rashes are very bright flaming red often lots of infected looking pimples and puss filled. Honestly the rare classic "diaper rash" we say will ery mild jsut a little extra pickness to her skin ussually after like a nap where an area kinda heated up a touch of diaper cream and a little nakie time cleared it right up. Allergies and such not so easy to cure.

Striping honestly you really should ever have to strip diapers some materials can and will hold detergents and build up more i like to always run a double rinse of my cloth diapers and laundry if you notice consistant classic nappy rashes diapers that don't seem clean or seem to really reek fast after child pees despite you changing fast then a strip cycle may be in order. Also if you notice a lot of suds in the rinse cycle tou may have build up.

snappi/pinning vs folding is a prefrence thing. Overall I prefer to pin a prefold i think it gets better containment and I just love the look DH prefered laying in a wrap and never touched the pin/snappi.. and i relented during wiggily changes..

On detergent look for simple ones free of extras not just dyes and perfumes but whitiners and brightiners which can irritate a childs skin.. However many people jsut use whatever they do for other laundry we ended up being a charlies soap fan ouselfs.

Hi
I can answer some of your questions (well, i can give my opinion on some of your questions- there is no right answer in diapering!)

I believe its the zinc oxide (and cod liver oil) that makes diaper cream unsafe for cd's. the burts cream does have zinc so you'd be wise to use a liner if you use burts. this is from our local diaper service's website- "Please do not use Regular or Original Formula Desitin, this particular formula permanently damages diapers due to high amounts of cod liver oil and zinc oxide."

no idea on the rash thing, we've only had one and it seemed to be the result of the PUL in diaper covers. we moved to fleece/wool and we're good now.

I think you strip diapers if there is a lingering odor or if you suspect a problem.

I prefer to snappi, then cover, especially in a newborn because it keeps all the poo in better. also my ds is a wiggle worm and if i dont snappi, the diaper is every which way and i get more mess in the cover.

I think the detergent thing is hit or miss. i use arm and hammer powder. i wanted to make my own but had a hard time finding the ingredients. i think people generally prefer to use free and clear versions (no perfumes/dyes etc).

Glad you're enjoyong cd'ing so far!!
Here are some answeras that I hope you find helpful.
1.) Rash cream that is safe for cd's is lanolin-based. Lanolin washes away in hot water, so it doesn't coat the diaper and leave behind a residue. I don't know about Burts Bee's, but the ones I use regularly on my kids are California Baby Diaper Cream and Weleda Calendula Diaper Cream. They're both lanolin-based. There are lots of others but I'm not familiar with them, as they're not available where I live. You can also use pure lanolin, like the kind for nursing moms.
2.) Rashes--they can be really tricky. I'm not much help here. But here's what I go by. I know that if the child is allergic to something, like a particular detergent, the rash wil look like welts or hives. Heat rash and urine-exposure rash looks like tiny little red dots, at least in my kids that's how it looks. Yeast rashes usually have red satellite dots, like there will be a red rash, and then individual bumps scattered around the main rash.

3.)You should strip your diapers if the begin to repel liquid (if you drip some water on a clean, dry diaper it should soak it right up--if it beads up on the diaper you need to strip). You should also strip if the diapers stink immediately after being urinated on. A little bit of urine smell os ok, but if the really stink as soon as they become wet you have a build-up of detergent and/or ammonia.

4.) Whether or not you fasten your diaper under the cover is all about preference. Fastening it can help contain poo which may help the cover (and baby's clothes) stay clean. It can also keep the diaper from drooping on a mobile baby. I choose to pin because that just works best for us.

5.) Detergents are another hot issue. It depends on your preference and budget. You want to avoid enzymes, softeners, perfumes, dyes and optical brighteners (which are dyes that bend light to make fabric appear brighter and thus cleaner--they are very hard to avoid in most store-bought detergents, and they don't bother many people). There are a lot of good diaper-friendly detergents (Charlies, Nellies, Country Save, Allens, etc)that aren't readily available in many areas so they need to be ordered and shipped. They usually need to be the only detergent used in the machine, so you have to wash all of your laundry with it. And they're expensive. That's a huge turn-off for me, so I use what I can buy in local stores. I use Purex Free and Clear. I've also used Arm and Hammer for Senstive Skin and Arm and Hammer Essentials with good results. There's a good list here that you should check out, it's very informative:

Hope this helps!

You can use any diaper rash cream, you just may need to use a liner with some. We love Grandma El's because it works great and we don't need a liner. You can find more info: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm

Finding out what caused a rash takes some trial and error. If it could be the diaper, use a liner. If it could be the detergent, try a different one. Keep trying different things until you find the cause. But do it one at a time or you won't know what the culprit was.

I strip mine monthly, when DS has a rash, or when they smell like ammonia.

If you snappi, it holds stuff in better. Just folding it can cause some leaking.

I used Purex F&C because I had heard it was CD safe, and we haven't had any problems causing us to change. Some mamas like detergents with only natural ingredients. Pinstripes and Polka Dots has detergent info as well as cream info.
