Squash Thief?

Something is stealing my squash. At first I just thought my summer squash weren't doing so well (all I've gotten are a few zucchini and no yellow or patty pan), but I had two small watermelons and some spaghetti squash that have just up and disappeared. Who are the most likely culprits and what do I do about this? I really want my squash!

Hmmm, I can't help you with what it IS, but maybe with what it ISN'T. I have observed chipmunks and squirrels in my garden, and have not had squash bothered. I am fenced so I know rabbits and woodchucks aren't getting in. Could it be rabbits or woodchucks in your case?

are you in the country or town, it could also be coons, or deer..I have seen a possum eat stuff like that too...and they will come back every night if they find a 'food source'.

when we lived in town we had a couple of neighbor kids who smashed ours. They claimed they did not, but they actually left a trail of the melons as they ate them to their front door!

Deer?
where I live, we have a lot of deer, see them sometimes up to 20-30 in the fields. Every night I can look out of my kitchen window and see deer. They are always grazing in the filed. they come up to my herb garden all the time (have a pond there and they drink from it) I do not like them to stay as they will eat stuff.. but they do 'visit' my garden that is planted (out of normal area) and continue to eat stuff. Next year we have to do something different in that area. We always try to plant stuff back by the woods, behind the pastures such as corn etc for them-so hopefully they will stay away from up by the house. There is just so many of them. It has not worked. So larger fences have to go in. It is not unusual for me to look out at the pasture and see a deer grazing in it!

We have and 8ft fence with deer netting on it, so I doubt it's deer, but it's not tacked down, so raccoons or groundhogs could be getting under it, I suppose. I've never seen raccoons around here, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I actually was suspecting them because there was no evidence of the melons at all. Nothing's been damaged, the food is just gone. How do you keep raccoons out???????:
