DD stepped on a rusty tack--reassure me please!

No, we don't vaccinate, but DD2 (3yo) stepped on a rusty tack today, and it went all the way in her foot (but still, what is that? 1/4 inch?). It bled a good deal, I cleaned it really well and put a bandage on. Tell me nothing is going to happen please. I know tetanus is very rare, but used as a scare tactic, but I need more reassurance, and perhaps some stats so family will know that she will be okay

Hopefully someone else will give you a more informed reply but I have read that tetanus requires an oxygen-free environment to grow and that the bleeding of the wound would cleanse the area with oxygen. As you've given the wee one's foot a good clean that is also good I hope she feels better soon.

Tetanus can only grow in an oxygen free environment and since it bled and blood is loaded with oxygen, there is no chance of tetanus. But watch for other infections.

If the wound has a red streak running from it toward the knee, take the child to the doctor. But I would then make sure the tetanus shot is not given at that time since it would only interfere with healing.

Keep it clean, when she is sleeping and not walking on it, take of the bandage and let it get some air. Don't worry about tetanus with this wound
