Hi! I want your suggestions for favorite thrillers. I dont like very very gory, but I do like scary and suspensful. Ghost stories, stuff like that. I just dont know what to read next! Thanks!!!!

Have you read any Stephen King? He's an awesome writer and has some really great stories... scary, full of suspense, great characters.

Hey, I love spooky books and don't love gore either. I have a ton of suggestions, some supernatural and some just atmospheric and suspenseful:
  • The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson
  • We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson
  • The Seance, John Harwood
  • The Ghost Writer, John Harwood
  • Ghost Story, Peter Straub
  • The Woman in Black, Susan Hill
  • Asylum, Patrick McGrath
  • Rebecca, Daphne DuMaurier
  • LOTS by Stephen King -- I totally agree with the previous poster (he can be fairly gory, though). Try The Shining, Salem's Lot, Misery, or The Stand.
  • Dark Sister, Graham Joyce
  • Waking the Moon, Elizabeth Hand
  • Mortal Love, Elizabeth Hand
  • Harvest Home, Thomas Tryon
  • The Other, Thomas Tryon (some very disturbing scenes, though)
  • Fingersmith, Sarah Waters
  • Nazareth Hill, Ramsey Campbell
  • For light suspense with good writing and fascinating settings, you can't go wrong with Mary Stewart -- try Rough Magic or Airs Above the Ground. They aren't particularly scary or super-suspenseful, but they're super-enjoyable!
  • This Boy's Life, Robert McCammon
  • Heart-Shaped Box, Joe Hill
  • The Moonstone, William Wilkie Collins. Also The Woman in White.
  • Summer of Night, Dan Simmons
  • Already Dead, Denis Johnson
  • Promise Not to Tell, Jenifer McMahon
  • The Egyptologist, Arthur Phillips

And I want to add The Church of Dead Girls, by Stephen Dobyns. The title makes it sound like the worst kind of slasher movie, but in fact it's very atmospheric and restrained and haunting.

Also, you might like T. M. Wright's Manhattan Ghost Story.

I like a lot of those Thalia listed. Shirley Jackson is one of my favorites and I loved Rebecca. I'm reading The Stand right now. We should do a book challenge where we read some of these during the month of October.

Oh gosh, even the movie! The movie is quite cheesy, IMO, but it still freaked me out. that is a good suggestion.
