Help me find the prefold love!

So we are mainly using prefolds (preemie) and Thirsties or Prorap(NB/XS) covers on DD (almost 6 wks and probably not much over 7lbs maybe 8 but I don't think so yet.

Anyway... I don't like that everytime I change her she is really wet. I keep looking around at getting fitteds (we have 2 but that are still pretty huge) or something else (probably pockets etc. We do have a bunch of BG OS but she's still too tiny) so that we can layer fabrics so she doesn't get so wet. Any suggestions?

I try to change her fairly often but she still sleeps alot and I hate to wake her just to change her ykwim? So for naps and nightime and usually if we go out I put her in sposies just because I know she wouldn't last in prefolds.

We do have a few doublers but most of them are huge and would I put them under or over the prefold? I started trifolding our prefolds width wise (short side) to make them more absorbant. Should I try a size up instead?

Thanks!

When did prefolds with my DD when she was an infant.

I made inserts! Take any absorbent cloth--hemp, old socks, terry cloth, microfiber towel, anything--and fold it into a pad the length of the prefold, then lay a strip of fleece over the top and sew it all together. That way the pad absorbs a lot of the wet and the fleece keeps the baby a lot more dry.

Put the insert inside the prefold so that it's what touches her skin!

I ha to size up to infant when my milk came in..........thirsties xs still fits.

For night I use a infant w/premie as a doubler then a fleece liner for dry feeling under a thirsties cover or wool....or 2 flats

Do you tri-fold or do you use a snappi or pins? If you use a snappi you can get a trimmer fit and adding a doubler won't seem so bulky.

If you're using preemie prefolds, a lot (but perhaps not all) of them are not as thick as regular prefolds. The preemies are 2x4x2 (I think) and all the other sizes are 4 layers on the edges and 8 in the middle, so 4x8x4. Perhaps that's why. Try the next size up - do they feel thicker?

I have to tell you - fitteds were nearly a guaranteed blowout for mine until she was older, much older. Prefolds were the only thing that held the poop in. I'd absolutely go for an insert in the preemies, or a bigger prefold before investing in fitteds.

Thank you! I think I will try to prep the infant prefolds and buy some fleece when I go to Joann's tomorrow. Hopefully that will do the trick!

I found ds was much wetter as a little baby then he is now. They just seem to pee constantly when they are wee & it stretches out more as they grow.

yes that.

i have also been toying with the idea of making a doubler like this but with a shamWOW in the middle- one of those super absorbant shammies from tv commercials- for night time diapers.

Also remember - with a prefold - they are going to feel wet. There is nothing "holding" the pee persay - its just layers of cotten. With aio's, pockets etc you have either the fleece lining which wicks it to the inserts, and the outershell that keeps that side dry. In prefolds they will always seem wetter because there is no extra...if that makes sense.

Now..to be honest..when it comes to nighttime changing - unless there is a poo, or its bothering my kids, I dont change their diapers. *hides*

Ohmygoodness!! This thought totally occurred to me earlier this evening (I spend huge amounts of time thinking about CDing lately, it seems, lol) - Why not make an insert out of a ShamWOW?!? It seems absolutely brilliant to me - is there any reason why this would not be pretty much the best insert/doubler EVER?!?

Just a warning - these materials (shamwow and similar products) have been treated with chemicals that neither adults nor babies should be in contact with...

Any type of doubler would prob do the trick. I def wouldn't do the shamwow, ITA w/Kika. Not even supposed to put microfiber against babies skin... little sensitive tushies
