No-poo/Shampoo question

I'd read that it takes your scalp 2 weeks to 2 months to learn not to over-produce oil. I assumed this meant that it takes that long to no-poo only once a week (this seems to be the goal, am i right?). I'm coming up on two months and i still need to no-poo every three days--on the third day, my hair is disgusting. Considering i have what you would call "normal" hair, this surprises me. Did it take longer for anyone else?

Also, when i returned from the beach the other week, my hair was so gross--sweat, ocean water, lack of proper washing (only had time for quick no-pooing here and there)--that i washed with shampoo. Four days later, my hair still looked freshly washed (b/c it was stripped by the shampoo, i know). I wouldn't mind shampooing weekly, rather than no-pooing weekly. Has anyone no-pooed their way to weekly shampooing?

What is your no-poo routine? What products are you using?

I put about 2T. bs in 8oz. water. This used to last me three washings, but then i thought i should use it all in one washing, so i did--no apparent change, though. Then about 2T. acv in 8oz. water on the hair past, say, my chin.

It's improved since i started--where i would get greasy by the second day. But it's only improved by one day.

That's all i use on my hair. I air-dry.

Do you wash wqith somethig else, I co-wash daily, and use an ACV rinse once a week, i shamppo about once a month, you can try using baking soda to wash your hair.

I use 1 Tbs baking soda in 8 oz water, followed by 1 ounce of 1:8 dilution of lemon juice (I'm blonde, wishing I were blonder.) I have no-pooed off and on for a year. I'm currently washing twice a week, and that seems to work pretty well. More than that and I get too dry, less than that and I get oily.

I'd recommend cutting back to 1 Tbs baking soda per wash, and cutting back to maybe 1 tsp ACV per wash. Too much acid sometimes leaves people with oily hair. You also might want to sprinkle a little of the ACV on the top part of your hair as well, to counter the baking soda that is there. My hair is only chin-length, so I use the acid everywhere.

I think your routine sounds fine - it's probably just a matter of "forcing" the hair into the pattern you want. You should only wash it once a week for three months. I am pretty certain that by the end of that time, you will be seeing the results you want.

Yes, you will have to put up with hair that's a bit oily in the meantime.

Try no-pooing every other wash and shampooing in between, going as long as you can between washings. When shampoo becomes too harsh (hair is dry and frizzy afterward) then go to no-pooing only. It worked for me!

I'm very impressed with the effects of vinegar on my scalp, and the times I've tried baking soda I've felt like it did nothing at all. Here's my article on my vinegar method.

With everything i've tried (no-poo, Nature's Gate, Dr. Bronner's), i like bs/acv no-pooing the best. BUT i'm gonna give the vinegar-only thing a try. Just for kicks. Thank you!

So I don't even put my BS in any water. I just make a paste and rub and then rinse. Then I decided to go with the lemon because I honestly don't like the smell of ACV in the shower, neither does DH,lol. So, I just use a lemon and squeze it over my head, run my fingers through it a few times and then rinse... seems to be working great.
