I just did a bit of nesting: put dd's diapers and covers (5 Toddle-ease diapers and 4 Dappi nylon pants) on the left side of the shelf, and the baby's diapers and covers (24 Kissaluvs 0 and 4 newborn Star Baby Bummis Super Whisper Wraps) on the right side of the shelf. Then I stuffed the rest of the stash into the diaper stacker: 3 27" birdseye flats, 15 2x5x2 DSQ prefolds, one regular 4x6x4 prefold, 1 organic premium birdseye prefold, 3 organic cotton and 1 bamboo MEOS, 1 BGOS organic snap AIO, a few Rikki Wraps and MEAF covers in varying sizes, and 1 newborn and 1 one-size Mommy's Touch cover.
I figure that makes for 2 days' worth of newborn diapers and 1 day's worth of one-size-fits-most diapers (the flats and prefolds would have to be doubled up on a baby older than a month...but they'll probably make great doublers with any kind of diaper, so they're worth keeping around, right?).
It's not really uniform enough for me. But it's enough diapers for the baby not to go naked--even if (s)he outgrows the Kissaluvs and Bummis overnight, I have enough in the larger sizes to get by washing every day until I can buy something else.
I still haven't truly decided between prefolds and fitteds or what styles or brands thereof or among Bummis, Blue Penguin or Mother-ease covers for after (s)he outgrows the KLs. I do definitely want 100% cotton and not too expensive. There's a temptation to buy a bunch more diapers to fill out the sample stash, but I have no storage space and I know I'll get overwhelmed if I have any more diapers than I currently have. I do wish there were an easy way to compare different diapers without actually having to buy them.
I should probably hold my horses until after the baby is actually here, but I want to put diapers on my baby registry on the off chance that someone might buy them for me, not that I'm really expecting anything at all, much less diapers, this time around. (And I actually want a breast pump and a two-shouldered baby carrier more, anyway. But still, diapers are fun.)
