I'm posting as a poll because i think this is a huge question that us first time soon to be mamas are having (at least in my ddc) so i just wanted to see in a poll what you experienced ladies have to say.

I chose the third option, but with a clarification-- my kids were done with passing meconium by the end of the third day. So I would recommend sposies during the meconium period, but not the first few weeks like the poll said. Just until your milk comes in. I don't think meconium ruins dipes. I just think that it's unpleasant to deal with when you're already recovering from birth and teaching baby to nurse. I always thought sposies were easier until the first few days were finished.

Mine were a little stained, but not ruined at all. Staining doesn't bother me, though. Yellow BM poo stains too

I recomend using disposables or a diaper service for at least the first week or so- not because of staining, but because there's just too much going on right after birth to worry about washing diapers right away. Mom needs to recover from birth, babe and mom need to learn how to breastfeed, and everybody in the household needs to bond with the new baby and adjust to the changes in the household. It's just not a time to start learning how to wash diapers.

With my first, I used a single package of newborn sized diapers, then switched to cloth on the 4th or 5th day when my mom came to help, since she was able and willing to wash diapers. The package lasted about half a week, long enough for the meconium to be gone and her cord stump to fall off.

But there were plenty of stained diapers later on when we dealt with "transitional poops" when solids were introduced, and then stinky messy toddler poops. Who cares if they stain? They're diapers! They're meant to hold pee and poop!

I've used cloth from birth for babies 2, 3 and 4 and bought a pack of disposables for baby 5. For baby 2, I cut up an old receiving blanket to use as liners and tossed the mec covered ones; no stains from mec, yellow bf poop on the other hand, stains. I didn't bother the next time and no mec stains either. I figured I just didn't need the extra laundry the first few days after #5, but if I had another baby (and I won't!) I wouldn't bother with disposables, because there's already so much laundry around here anyway, I don't think I'd noticed an extra 3-4 loads/week.

It'll fade over time, especially if you're able to hang your diapers in the sun.

this is reassuring. people kept telling me it was not a good thing to use my cd's right away cause they would get ruined.
my dh and mother will both be here and are able to do laundry....so i'm not too worried about that. i really just want what is best for baby.

IDK, I used sposies for the firs month or so with DS1 and are following that same pattern with DS2 - but we only have bumgenius one-size diapers, and with DS1 they were from 8-35#s (2.0s) and DS weighed 7# 7.5 oz at birth.. so they ddin't quite fit right away, and DS2 the 3.0s say from 7-35#s... but he only weighed 6# 9.4oz!! SO... yeah Hoping here shortly he'll get up to 7 and we can start in on the CD love!!

I used cloth from diaper #2 and didn't have stains, but then again, she didn't really have any meconium.

I used sposies for the first few weeks until I got on my feet. I love cloth diapers though, and I'm seriously considering using them from day 1 with the next baby. I really think it's a matter of personal preference more than anything. If you want to start with cloth but you're worried about stains, you could always use liners.

I used sposies for the first 3 weeks w/DS, but I had BGOS and they are HUGE on a newborn!! Now I know better, and I will be using NB pf's from diaper #1. They will get washed & sunned many times, so stains will go away. And, what Ruthla said, they're SUPPOSED to hold poo & pee
