torn playsilk - how to repair?

It has about a 4-6" L-shaped tear/hole near one edge.

Do I cut off 4" and hem it up (seems like a large sacrifice)?

or do I stitch along the tear and make it look rather frankenstein-like?

And, while I'm asking - do I need to sew it by hand? Or could I zigzag it on my machine? How do you make that pretty little rolled-edge?

thanks!

I haven't tried this, but I saw that you haven't received any replies and wanted to help. Do you have an embroidery hoop? I think the easiest thing to do would be to sew it by hand in a hoop to stabilize it. I think you could machine stitch it. If I was going to try that, I'd use a stabilizer like tissue paper. Carefully pin it to nice, flat tissue paper (like you'd use for wrapping a present) then slowly zig zag over the tear using the widest setting on your machine and a medium width. It may be difficult to tear the stabilizer off afterward without pulling out the stitches, though.

The hem I'd do by hand, just roll it with your fingers and stitch it. Did you try googling "sew a rolled hem" ?

The embroidery hoop part above gives me an idea, maybe you could stitch in a pattern of some kind to make the sewing seem intentional and nice.

Jamie ... great idea! baby's name is Zoe, i bet I could make the tear look like a "Z" !

We're going on a cross-country car trip in 2 weeks. That could be a sewing project while driving ... now to find some thread ...

thanks
