Credit Card company had a false deliquency on our credit

A month ago DH opened an account in a credit union but only got basic limited checking out. This week I tried it told me I would have that same account. Well it was because 'we were deliquent on a closed credit card account'. I called and the CC company charged us a yearly fee after the account was closed, so they say they are going to take care of it.

I called our Credit union, the first woman told me if it is their fault then call back in about a month to upgrade our account, I next one told me wait 6 months!

What other steps should I take to make sure that they fix our credit.

Each year you can pull a credit report for free to view what is on there. What you'll need to do is go there (someone post the link I can't remember what it is on top of my head) and review and dispute what is incorrect. They have 30 days to fix/verify it. If they can't verify their information they have to remove it.

And, it's definitely always a good idea for anyone here to do that every year. The first year we could do that we even had some incorrect information corrected on ours (wrong address, etc.)
