Group B Strep and "The Eye Gunk"

Since I don't have any STD's the eye gunk seems a little unnecessary, but I am Group B Strep positive and am planning to have a water birth in our hospital's birth center. Can the eye gunk help prevent the baby becoming infected with Group B Strep? Can they expose themselves from opening their eyes in the birth canal, or is it just a nasal/oral thing?

I was also GBS+ & researched it a lot. I never heard anything about the eye gunk being connected to it. GBS infections don't impact just the eyes, so I don't think there's any correlation at all.
You either try to kill the bacteria in your vagina with a hibicleans wash or take IV antibiotics. (There are other homeopathic remedies thought to kill it, but I don't know if research supports those.)
