i think sometimes the cord gets blamed because it's easier to blame the cord than say "i don't know what happened."

if people ask why i had a c/s, i tell them it was because DD's heartrate tanked because the cord was around her neck. but i don't know for sure that's why her heartrate tanked. the long story is that she was having decels from the very beginning of my labor, but she was recovering, and the OB wanted to hold off on a c/s until it became absolutely necessary (with my consent. the L&D nurse, who was a sweet lady, did NOT like this plan). OB (a friend, who wanted me to have a c/s even less than i wanted me to have one) said she really didn't know why DD was tolerating labor badly, but that it could be a problem with the cord. when she tanked and didn't come back up and i had the c/s (in 4 minutes), OB said the cord was around her neck. but it's no guarantee that that was what caused the decels. OB did try flushing water back into my uterus when the heartrate wouldn't come back up, so it doesn't seem like the cord was hung up somewhere, but maybe it was and the fluid just didn't work.

so, yeah, my thoughts are that it's an obvious culprit, so it often gets the blame. it's just easier to blame the cord than it is to say, i don't know what happened.
