nicu for dehydration???

Getting twitter style updates third hand so I think the actual message may be unclear and getting lost as it is passed along. Like in the game of telephone.

Report that baby in nicu for dehydration immediately following birth. Currently less than 3 hours old.

Is that even possible? Any idea what they actually meant.

Waiting for updates is nerve wracking.

Actually, yes, I do believe it is possible for a newborn to be dehydrated. I'm thinking it happened to my cousins baby many years ago.

Was the mother allowed to get dehydrated during birth? You don't have details, but just wondering out loud that can be a good possibility. Being summer, mothers get dehydrated quickly enough. If they had a no eating/drinking policy, but she didn't want an IV, and it took a little longer than expected, I would see how it could be possible.

I was having a VBAC in the hosp, and I finally consented to the heplock. They gave me a popsicle and some ice chips (which I filled with DH's apple juice) around 8:30am. This was after our transfer from a UC, and I had been able to keep up my water intake up after 90 hrs of PROM. Well, I didn't take a drink with me. By 1pm, I was getting so thirsty that I finally was drinking while in the shower when they "let me" shower during labor. And, she was born at 1:30pm. I should have been asking for more to drink though, but they are only "allowed" to give you so much. But, that was a quick birth.

Anything longer, I suppose they would push the IV so as to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen. Kymberli

We finally got a few more details. Some sort of placenta problem led to dehydration. Baby is doing pretty well and should be sprung from the nicu in a few days.

Well then, PTL they got the baby out in time. Prayers for the baby and parents for a quick recovery. Kymberli
