Weight gain? : (

Anyone else out there having a problem with the weight gain already? I have gained 3 almost 4 lbs in the first 5 weeks. That's crazy. I had to quit smoking and stop taking my adderall, which causes me to get really hungry, obviously, but I'm also eating healthy. So what the hey? They said we should only gain up to 5 lbs in the first trimester. That means I can only gain 2 more lbs in 7 weeks. : ( I'm not eating like a pig, i swear.

I am 9 weeks today, according to the doc (according to my own calculations I am only 7 weeks)

I have lost 12 pounds... and I don't have morning sickness...

Even with horrible morning sickness, during my first pregnancy I gained about 10 pounds in the first trimester, but only gained 24 pounds total by the end of the pregnancy. I just gained a lot of the weight at the beginning - I suspect because the only thing that I could keep down was cheese and avocado.

This pregnancy I haven't gained quite as much, but (fingers-crossed) I'm not quite as sick either, so I've been eating a more normal diet.

As long as you're eating well, I wouldn't worry about it yet. Your body just may need more in the beginning.

Everyone's body is different and has different needs. One person may "need" to gain 8 lbs in the first trimester and another may "need" 2. I don't really see how a chart can tell me what my body needs. Can a chart tell me why I've been bedridden for over a week with terrible morning sickness while some people are prancing around happy like this is the Sound of Music?

Also, weight gain does not necessarily equal fat gain. Fluids add weight, larger organs add weight, etc.

Eat healthy, exercise, and just relax.

I gained a couple pounds. IT's cause I'm having such a hard time exercising. Just thinking about it makes me want to puke.

My Weight

I stopped weighing myself... At 9 weeks I had gained almost 10 pounds. I haven't been eating anything that is bad for be and before I got pregnant I was a raw vegan. Since somewhere around my 5th week I started trusting my body and eating what I wanted to eat (intuitive eating), which has resulted in a little cooked fish and some whole grain bread. There were even a couple days where I wanted grilled cheese : Now I'm almost back to my original diet. I didn't have any morning sickness and wasn't eating a ton more than usual and the weight made me very nervous because I had read the same thing. It's been almost two weeks since my last appointment with my midwife and I haven't got on a scale. I've decided it doesn't matter, as long as I am listening to my body and not pigging out on food (which I haven't been). I eat when I am hungry and only crave healthy stuff. So the way I figure it, I'm gaining weight that I need to gain. I'm sure you are too.

You did mention that you quit smoking. Your body might be normalizing a little after the smoking depending on how long you did it for previously. Just a thought. I'm sure it will even out! Blessings & Good Luck!

I don't own a scale, because otherwise every single day I would be obsessing this way. Are you bloated? When I am, my weight jumps a lb or two. Also, stopping smoking/stopping medication can have an effect on your metabolism, but i think everyone can agree that a few extra lbs is much preferred to smoking. Just keep making healthy food choices, and try to focus on whether you feel healthy, not what the numbers say.

Well that wasn't the question, was it? Jeesh! Hope you're staying healthy

I'm with the "Also, weight gain does not necessarily equal fat gain" and also, I've gained fat too! I can tell in my face I'm just trying to be ok with it.

I'm bound by a metabolic condition to "good" food choices and exercise, I'm just ravenous! I also quit smoking ( ) & had to stop taking Metformin (which I take for metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance) & I know that comes into play with my hunger.

Anyway! It's SO hard not to let other's weight loss/gain get you down - let's try to be good to ourselves!

I keep focusing on the positive: I'm going to breastfeed! That's the best diet ever!

lol I am healthier than I was... They just put me on insulin for my Diabetes and I have been watching my food intake a lot more and my blood sugars have been more stable and I started exercising....

we don't have a scale, so i have no idea where exactly i started or where i am now, but i'm definitely in early maternity pants (these pants definitely fall off my butt when there isn't any extra weight around). i'll just be 8 wks this weekend, so yea, it seems bizarrely early for me too -- i didn't need maternity clothes until well after 20 wks last time.

as far as eating "healthy" goes.. i try to consider that whatever it is my body is asking for is "healthy" -- even if normally i would never eat such a meal and call it so (for example, on sunday this week i had five pieces of bread slathered with butter, two spoonfuls of bean salad, and a boatload of watermelon. not UNhealthy, per se, but.. pretty far off my normal fare). i do tend to avoid very sugary things (easy enough anyway, since most sweet stuff totally turns my stomach) and we dont' have anything with high fructose corn syrup in the house, but the other day i did eat a bunch of fritos 'cause i needed a snack and they were the only thing we had around that would do.

eating for me is my least favorite part of pregnancy. everything is just so OFF from my normal diet and i have a hard time coming to terms with the craziness that my body seems to need. but i almost always feel so much better when i listen to what my body is telling me, so i just try not to get TOO hung up.

hope the first trimester goes quick for you and maybe things will settle down and you'll feel better about the whole situation

CONGRATS on quitting smoking, by the way! that is AWESOME! my partner quit when i was 7 months pregnant with DS and it was HARD but it's been SO GREAT for all of us! and yea, he put on a little weight from it too, but man it is better than cigarette stink for sure!

Thank you all

Wow!!! Thank you all very much. This is very nice to hear. I felt really bad about being concerned with weight gain, almost like I was being selfish. But, you guys really are making me feel a lot better. Just nice to know, that I'm not alone. So, really, thank you.:::

I bet the smoking has A LOT to do with it. I was smoking when I got pregnant with all three of my other children. I gained 7lbs+ the first trimester! (it's mortifying to me now, but I never completely quit with my first ) With my last two I quit immediately, but I think it definitely contributed to weight gain. This time I've been a nonsmoker for quite awhile before I got pregnant, and I haven't gained any weight so far (knock on wood!)

I have been having morning sickness bad too. Since 10dpo. BUT...when I don't, I eat well. At my 5 week appt earlier this week I was 123 lbs (from 117)..yea so...i need to slow down.

Oh that's right, from the UW thread. 12lbs in 6 weeks is great - I'm surprised your doctors are encouraging weight loss, though! Aren't obese women asked to maintain or something? Glad you're getting the hang of the BGM

Anyway! OP! I hope it's loud & CLEAR that pretty much everyone is right where you are I'm SO glad you're feeling better!!! :

I gained 50 lbs with DS, and I lost it all by 6mo post partum. Then I gained another 15 pounds. I'm not going to weigh myself this time, because it can be so depressing and demoralizing, and truly, it doesn't matter. Pregnancy weight isn't like other weight.

The best thing to do is start exercising (she says, sitting on her lazy butt in her pjs instead of doing her workout dvd), because that's good for you in so many ways. The exercise will help regulate your metabolism and will help you to only gain "good" weight. Truly, though, every body is different. You may gain all your weight now and then slow way down in the third trimester, and then you'll freak out that you went four weeks without gaining any weight and omg your baby is too small and is going to die...or you can just stay off the scale and go back to the kitchen where the food is.

I think what your body *does* in pregnancy is individual, and cannot be compared to other women.

As long as you are following what you already know is correct--eating from a variety of colorful and fresh foods that are full of nutrients and either continuing to exercise (or starting slowly if you have been sedentary) then you will be OK. YOu can't discount moving less because of feeling tired/nauseous OR of putting on water weight which is NEEDED:P

My MWs prefer women to gain 1lb a WEEK throughout the entire pregnancy.

I also agree it's demoralizing and undervaluing yourself to at any point in your life allow yourself to feel like a good person OR a bad person based on your scale weight. We're better then that!:

Especially during pregnancy!!

I think it's starting to slow up a bit. The cigarette cravings are getting less and less. Still only maximum of 1 cigarette a day for the past three days! I used to smoke half pack or more a day. I went walking around a lot today. I bought some clothes for the months ahead. Just a shirt and some jeans. No preggy clothes, just clothing two sizes too big. I'm kinda against the whole maternity clothing. All I think of is a mumu. Anyway, it made me feel good.

I gained one pound ... but I'm not sure if that's really weight gain or the natural variance in weight from day to day.

I haven't had any morning sickness, and I've been continuing my normal exercise routine.

I'm not going to worry about it unless there's some kind of huge fluctuation - like I drop 10 pounds (with my weight, not a good sign). Or I'm gaining/growing a huge amount, in which case I'll get checked out for potential twins or issues. Otherwise, I pick healthy foods, and eat when I'm hungry. Lately, I've been eating around 8 times per day ... so I'm sort of just grazing all day. It seems to be what my body needs.

unless i feel something is off, i won't be weighing myself. i've dealt with an eating disorder in the past and know what can happen if i start stepping on that scale everyday. if i'm healthy and babe is healthy then life is good
