Gosh, My generation were cloth diapered in the 70's. So basically, anyone over 30 is very likely to have been cloth diapered. no trouble with hips over here.
The way I see it, dis. are plastic, they don't breath and are scratchy. For these reasons alone, we have good reasons to use cloth. Babies can not control their own body temp, so dis. will only add to a baby possibly over heating, which are one of the scare factors for SIDS. I'd personaly want to do all that I could to make my baby comfortable, I'd rather wear cotton underware over plastic.
you can also go coverless with cloth.
Prefolds can be used with a snappy, this will allow the diaper to be adjusted to fit better, with less bulk between the legs and will allow the diaper to be used without a cover.
A cover with leg gussets will help contain the breastfed poop, cloth itself also holds onto the poop better than dis. You can also fold a predile in a way that help contain blow outs too.
Prowraps are probably the best cover out there for containing big blowouts, although you will have to wash the cover after a blowout, you won't have to wash bedding, car seat covers, sling, your clothes ( where ever baby happened to be) plus the babies clothes.
Using cloth with a diaper service will save you on laundry, and since you are overwhelmed with laundry, using cloth will help you out a lot!!
covers can be hand washed and line dried, or they can go on with your regular laundry. I would recomend six covers for a newborn, so you don't run short.
I am curious, do you pay for the prefolds with the laundry service? are the prefolds used on other babies too? Or just alocated to one baby? Does a diaper service use bleach? I don't quite know how they work.

I know of a few laundromats that have wash & fold service, but you have to drop it off and pick it up, it's super expensive, and I doubt they do diapers (bodily waste). I wish, though!!!!
