Looking for any info on Sheridan...just in genreal what's it like? Crunchy, conservative, schools, drug problems, shopping, food co-op etc...

Right now we are in Bozeman, Mt and dh wants me to start researching sheridan as there is a 'possible' job opportunity there! Thanks!

I replied in the WY tribe thread too .... now that I know you're in Bozeman, that gives me a better idea what you're familiar with? Are you originally from MT, or moved in (and how long)?

Sheridan is a lot like Bozeman 20 years ago in terms of what the town is like. The surrounding area is largely agricultural, there's a definite feel of that in the community. There's the local college (Sheridan Community College), and the hospital, as the other main employers other than the coal bed methane companies and the coal mines (quite a few people live in Sheridan but work the mines).

Sheridan is one of the strongest Republican counties in a strongly Republican state ... you have to work to find the Democrats, but it's a pretty active and vibrant community once you find them. And I think there's a bit of a network once you plug in. Dh's family is from Sheridan so we were already a part of that group, more or less, I didn't have to search it out. There are some people who are very interested in locally grown food, CSA, etc. There is a community garden through the Senior Center, with an official coordinator and everything. The Farmer's Market is pretty good .... In terms of amenities, well, it's about 14,500 people so it's a smaller community than Bozeman. The movie theater is a five-plex. WYO Rodeo is a big, big deal on the PRCA circuit and town fills up for that in a major way .... it's probably the 'event' of the year in town. There's a pretty substantial group of folks who are very conservative Christians ....

I think we skew a bit to the older population -- there are young families, and the schools have 290 kindergartners this year which is the most they've had since the 80's, but there's a bit of a 'hole' between the young families and the retirees, population-wise. Cost of living is comparable to Bozeman, or was last time we looked it up on a COOL calculator. Housing is not cheap. Although it may have gone down now that the economy has been so poor....? You'd definitely want to look into that before making the leap though.

I think between the two threads I've covered most everything. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all this valuable info!!!!

Ok, so I am not originally from MT, actaully only lived here a year now. Before that we were in NM for 10 years and before that I lived in S. California where I grew up. :

We really like Bozeman, esp all the stuff to do for kids, there's so much it's actually overwhelming at times! I worry about leaving that and going somewhere that doesn't offer as much for families....but Sheridan does sound nice and like a good place to raise kids.

Bozeman too has ALOT of conservative, Rep. Christians, not that there is anything wrong with that, but not where I fit in to the spectrum at all. So, maybe Sheridan wouldn't be that much of a stretch for us? Most friends I've made here, if not ALL, fit into that niche, so we just don't talk much about religion or politics, but it would be nice to meet people from other walks of life though...

What about parks and recreation...you mentioned trails which is great. Are there alot of parks in the residential neighborhoods? Bozeman seems to have one on nearly every corner which is nice to really explore and meet lots of different people.

And what about the library or the museum? I couldn't find too much online about kids programs, do they have many?

One thing you mentioned has me wondering: the mine situation around Sheridan. You said it's a coal mine? Does it influence/affect the area much? What about runoff, does it affect the water supply or air quality? We lived near a mine in NM and it really kind of was the main business in the area.

Anyway, I can't think of anything you didn't already cover, so thank you so much!!! If we end up there I'd LOVE to meet up with you other mothering mamas, we can make our own little group instead of joining MOPS or some other organization like that!

There are several - less than Bozeman, I think. But quite a few. There's a really nice park near the library and senior center, where the Farmer's Market is held, with a fountain etc. (intended as a wading pool for kids too). There's another park that's large which is where they have the Concert in the Park all summer (Thursday nights? I don't remember which night, we seldom attend). Then some neighborhood parks sprinkled around too ... we are less than 2 blocks from a park. The walking trails are good, and eventually will connect the whole town (there are unpaved 'breaks' in the path in a few places right now). And of course, there are the Big Horns, which have lots of campgrounds etc. ... there is a nearby lake quite a few people go to - Lake DeSmet I think. Lake in the mountains, too.

There is a children's section at the museum which is cool. Nowhere near MoR, but still a nice museum with some fun interactive stuff for kids. The library has story time T/W/Th, I think it's baby/preK/K (but could be wrong), in the mornings. And during the summer, they have a ton of activities for kids of various ages to participate in (some one-time things, some are over a week or more).

The Y here is really nice, and does a good job too of having things for kids- not just athletic stuff, soccer/bball/swimming, but also summer camps and art classes, after school stuff, etc. They have a website: http://www.sheridanymca.org/ They also have an indoor play park.

The mine doesn't impact our water/runoff (it runs towards MT instead) .... Those out of town are impacted by CBM issues, not as much from the companies as from the methane itself (ranchers can light their stock tank water on fire as a fun trick, for instance) - water quality isn't always very good outside of town, it depends where you are whether you're going to have some really difficult water.

...And thus my introverted decision never to join one of the groups, could end in never having to worry about it anyway.

Good luck with your decision! If you want to PM me with the name of the company your dh is considering, dh and I can let you know what we've heard about that company in terms of what it's like to work for etc.

Thank you sooooo much for all the info! Unfortunatley DH just found out that the position was already filled but was told that if it doesn't workout (or the person never shows up, he hasn't started yet) they will be callinng DH...so we'll just have to leave it up to fate and if we are supposed to go it will happen. Sheridan sounds really nice and this last bit of info you gave me made it sound like we'd be pretty happy there, even coming from Bozangeles! BTW, DH is a business banker for a major bank that has newly opened (I think) in the area.

Thank you again so much, I feel really bad that you went to all this trouble and for now it's not even an option for us to go.....sorry. DH just replied to the job posting too late I guess.

No problem! At least you'll know what it's like if you have another opportunity here, right? And meanwhile, you've got the Museum of the Rockies in your backyard. I think I could *live* in their Living History Farm.

Yes, I agree MoR Living History Farm is awesome, I would love to move right into the old farm house! We are having a pretty boring summer though and not doing too much since I am 9w pregnant and have horrible morning sickness, ugh! But, soon, I will get back into taking the kids to all the fun stuff they have here to do!

Thanks again!
