Little Lions Prefolds (seconds?)

My brain is fried; I am no longer thinking rationally about these diapers. :

I'm expecting my first in September, and here's what I know

*I want to get 2 small proraps snapping covers in addition to the 2 xs thirsties and 2 small thirsties that I have now.
*I'm getting two snappies and a package of diaper pins.
*I'm getting two dozen flats
*I know I want to buy from Little Lions.
*I have access to a serger, and am totally willing to trim myself if necessary.

I need help with the prefolds... I think I need 36 total.

I'm trying to decide between the infant prefolds, the short premiums 1 and 2, and the capri prefolds.

It seems that everyone agrees that infant prefolds are too small -- they run out of width. But will the capri's fit a newborn at all though?

I'm scared that the seconds prefolds will not shrink up/be as absorbant. The last thing I want is to get frustrated adn quite CD'ing because I was too cheap to go for the expensive prefolds. If it was just the stitching, I'd be willing to redo that at home. And even then, do I get the 1's or the 2's?

Finally, are 6 covers (in small and xs) and 36 prefolds enough? I was hoping that this would last us until 6 months.

TIA.

I'm not sure if the capri pfs would fit in the xs covers. I just bought some and they're as wide as the regular pfs- it seems they would be sooo bulky. Honestly, at the price LLs is selling their infant seconds, I just couldn't pass them up. Plus, later you can use them as nighttime doublers.

BTW, they fluff up very nicely. I bought 2 doz infants (seconds) and 2 doz capris (first quality) and I can't tell a difference.

I disagree that the infant's are too small - they fit great! The preemies are tiny though. They also make great doublers and I doubt think the capris would fit in the XS size. A few up mine (seconds from Little Lions) did not fluff up but are still very absorbent, 2 of the seconds (out of 24) have torn seams and some are shorter - but they ALL work great. I will be using the infants as nighttime doublers when my LOs using the premiums.

I prefer to fold them down as there's more absorbent material - I didn't go with the capri's for that reason.

Really though - you'll make whatever you get work! Don't stress about it!

Thanks you guys. I think I'm getting to the point where I feel like if I don't make the right decision for anything baby related then I'm a bad mom or something. Waaay too much importance on these diapers.

deep breath.

I don't know why I didn't consider getting the infants as seconds. The reason I thought the capri's would work in the xs, is because I thought they were supposed to be the same size as the GMD yellows? Is that not right?

Ok, so I'm thinking we'll get 1 doz infants seconds and 2 doz. capri's. that's plus the 2 doz flats.

I'd like to get another doz infants, but I know dh thinks this is too many diapers already. In his mind, he's thinking that since we'll wash every day, we'll need 2 doz diapers.

ShwarmaQueen, did you end up getting the 4x6x4 infants or the 4x8x4 infants? There's a much bigger savings with the 4x6x4.

I wish they had a seconds on capris, but I'm not sure how the 'short premiums' will work out with the covers.

MommaShark, did you get the short premium seconds from little lions?

The measurements are very similar (12 1/2" X 13 1/2-14''). I think they'll work in S covers, but for NB or XS they're too bulky. Plus, you'd have to do some serious folding to get them to fit a 7 lb newborn!

I'd get another doz infants, 2 dozen of each seems more realistic.

My DH was the same way! Then I explained to him that there will be days as a newborn where our lo will blow right through a doz! And besides, that 1 doz (at $10) is still half of what we would pay for a pack of sposies!

I just got the 4X8X4. I really have no clue, but I'm guessing the extra couple of layers might make a difference in absorbancy.

I wish they had capris as seconds too! It seems like the short premium 1s are most similar to the capris, but I don't know...you can email Gina (email on 'contact us' tab) regarding them and I'm sure she'd tell you- she's very helpful.

eek!I placed my order just a bit ago. I got the proraps, the snappis, the 1 doz infant (seconds), 2 doz flats, and 2 doz premiums (seconds) that I can trim. I kinda wish I had ordered the 4x6x4 infant seconds now as well. I never thought to compare all this to the price of a disposable diaper.

I wonder if she'll modify my order? that being said, I know I can order that size infant prefolds from elsewhere if I need to later. Plus, we are using sposies for the first few weeks. And I'll have the flats.

Thanks so much you two, All this baby shopping is just a stab in the dark, it feels like, no matter how much you try and prepare.

Surely you got free shipping with that order, right? I'd email her back (just hit reply from the conf. email) and tell her to add to it! She's very responsive. I found shipping to be ridiculous elsewhere on PFs, but understandably because they are heavy.

GL!

ok... so i've decided that I'll trim the seconds premiums, and I'll use flats and the infants.

(I've seriously gone over this in my head so many times!) DH wants me to just buy them and stop worrying! I just feel like we've already spent so much on the diapers, and I'm terrified that DH, who wants to do most of the diapering for the first few weeks, will find that it's harder than he thought, and that we'll end up using sposies.
