baby shower gift for a good friend?

I know, since I have two dc I should know just the perfect thing to whip up for my friend's son. I have no idea!!!
I started a matching hat and sweater. The hat is okay, hate the sweater and will be frogging it. I'm at the point where I just want something quick and fun. I have some Christmas knitting to do and this is bogging me down. Pllus, I don't want to put frustration into the knitting when I should be thinking happy thoughts for the little sweetie. Due date is mid Dec. Maybe a few hats and a pair of booties? I saw some cute poncho patterns, but it was mostly flat st st, I'd rather do st st in the round. Was also thinking about making nothing for the baby and making a shawl for the mom for cosleeping and nursing warmth. Do you think these booties can be worn by a boy? http://members.home.nl/tdpj/Patronen...%20bootees.pdf

I think they could be worn by a boy if done in a really masculine wool. I would have loved some really cool hats for dd who was born in Jan...I mean "cool" not baby bonnet style. Maybe a funky earflap hat with a tassle and matching mitt set. It's super hard to find warm hats and mitts for a newborn, and the scratchy gloves aren't warm enough outside, atleast not in the great white north

Ds had a pair of socks knitted to look like mens work socks, they we're super cute and really warm

How about knitting her a baby cocoon? I'm facinated with these right now. It think they drape so beautifully. Are you a Ravelry member? I found these patterns:

http://twincitiesknitties.blogspot.com/ (not on Ravelry)

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...ed-baby-cocoon (Ravelry)

http://amandascreativeattempts.blogs...by-cocoon.html (blog)

Hope that helps.

I just did a set for my SIL (see here). She has a version for long sleeves as well. I love it and it would be easy to do without stripes if you didn't want the fiddliness. I'm in love with baby sweaters/cardigans right now.

I like this one...
and this one (Ravelry link)...
and this one...
and a boyish one here..
and another..

I have another hiding somewhere in my computer that I will find. It has a small shawl collar that is just fantastically boy. I am loving sweaters.
