An hour of nursing?

Nak.

About when can I start seeing nursing sessions that last less than an hour or more? Ds is almost 6 weeks old & he never nurses for less than an hour at a time

I'm trying to get school shopping done for my older two & it's near impossible when he won't nurse if I'm moving at all. Sooo, I'm a little flustered & wondered if anyone knew about when it might taper down a little. I keep seeing people saying they nurse for 20 minutes..what a dream that would be

(((HUGS))) Sounds like he may not be latched on properly. Can you get to an IBCLC to help? Nursing sessions should not last more than 20 minutes.

That's not true, in my case anyway. Mine still has long sessions, and he's 10 months old, and has a great latch.
Mine stopped doing it all the time and did some 5-10 min. sessions once he hit around 2-2 1/2 months old.

sigh. Hence the word "MAY." It's always a good place to start in looking at the latch.

Can you get to a LLL meeting? My dd would nurse for 1-2 hours at a time at first as we were correcting some breastfeeding problems, but it really didn't last more than a couple of weeks. A good LLL leader should be able to tell you if that is latch related or if it's just your little one.
Hang in there! It won't last forever either way!

I had one slow nurser (45 min) and one quick on(15-20 min even as a newborn).

MindfulBirth, I would disagree with your assertion that a nursing session "should" not last longer than 20 min. Where are you getting that information from? What is a mom with a hungry, perfectly latched baby supposed to do? Pull baby off at 21 minutes?

OP, is your LO trying to nurse to sleep? Could it be a sleep issue and not a nursing one?

:

Many babies nurse for a LONG time in those early days. I also had a long nurser and a shorter one.

My newest DS would nurse for an hour also. Turns out in our case it was a tongue tie (Ankyloglossia). My midwife cut it and now he nurses for usually 15-20 minutes.

Around 2 1/2 months Henry started nursing for less than an hour. He's not consistently short (some times he still goes close to an hour), but it's easier now. I was jealous reading about people that nursed for 15 minutes and were done.

I had a LONG nurser and one that just "got right down to business" quickly and neither had latch problems. As far as how long a nursing session "should" last, I don't know because each baby is different and has varying degrees of how hungry/thirsty they are. My youngest would nurse for well over an hour at times....I swear my butt grew roots to that rocking chair I sat there so long
