Backed-up vs constipated? And how to fix either?

Okay, my turn at TMI again,

I feel like I'm full of $hit!! From stem to stern. It feels like my digestive system is so backed up and moving so slowly, that every little thing I eat or drink causes me nausea and/or heart burn, and brings on contractions. I constantly feel like I need to poop, and I do at least once a day, and it's not too hard or painful to pass, but I don't feel "satisfied" after wards either.

SO...how to fix this? How do I help my system work a little better?

I called one of my doulas, and she said that maybe I don't actually have to poop, that maybe baby's head is engaged and making me THINK I need to poop when I really don't.

Maybe.

But then why the nausea/heart burn after eating? It's like my meals just aren't moving DOWN. And when I do finally poop, the nausea goes away almost instantly.

HELP!!! I've never had poop problems in pregnancy before!!

Just a couple days ago I was loose, now I'm backed up. Ugh!

anyway.....lots of fruit and veggies seem to do the trick for me.

Well, I am NO expert except in the "backed up" part of it! I have always struggled with being backed up... my entire life. I know there are others who can give you better advice but I'll tell you what I do that helps me.

I take Papaya enzymes after every meal. They are safe during pregnancy. I also give them to my kids when they are having trouble with BM's. Two of them have trouble, the others don't.

I use olive oil whenever I can... sometimes I fry chicken without skin in a little bit of olive oil. The olive oil helps lubricate and get things moving.

Lemons are good for breaking matter down so I buy lots and make homemade lemonade, too. I squeeze a whole lemon into a large glass of water and add some Stevia to it. I try to do this atleast twice a day. Sometimes I just make a whole pitcher of it.

Gotta run but will try to write more later....

canned fruit, juice and all, can help clear you out, too.

ugh - I've been having the same troubles - first loose, then 'backed up', sucks, right?

I hope you figure it out soon. I'm at least not nauseous.

i second texasspeech. . . for real go get some metamucil and start taking that. if you drink it before you got to bed, in the morning you will poo and it will be awesome.

take it from the girl who had to go to the e.r. cause i was so constipated
post #12 of 19
would you believe me if i said metamucil constipates me? yep.

here are my tricks:

1. glass of hot water with lots of lemon upon waking, about 1/2 hour before eating.

2. prunes/prune juice

i have also been feast/famine with poo this pregnancy--either total craps or constipation. been on the constipation rounds for about 1 week or so now, but when i pass a poo it hurts. so sometimes i lube my bum hole with my daughter's burts bees baby oil to help it all stretch/slide out. yeah, gross.

the fun never ends here.

sometimes exercise helps, too, but i've been bad at that lately.

seems like we're all struggling with these big babes!

lorilu, funny you should mention that because as it would happen prunes/prune juice constipate me. haha.

also everything everyone mentioned, fruits and veggies, fiber cereals, watermelon, tons of water, water with lemon...none of those things work for me only thing that works is metamucil.

I just suggested this in the other thread. After my first pregnancy I was constipated and my grandma suggested drinking prune juice. It works best on an empty stomach, like first thing in the morning and it definitely works! I do NOT like the taste of prune juice but I would hold my breath and drink it down.

sounds good to me, even if it doesn't work.

My DH swears by apples. I don't eat them often because they actually make my stomach just hurt, nothing more. But he says they help if he eats one daily. (sorry DH ) You could also try malic acid as I believe that's the same thing that is in apples. And I've heard that drinking a glass of warm salt water on an empty stomach can help get things moving although I've never tried it.

I have done the Master Cleanse and they say 4 cups (1 quart) warm water with 2 teaspoons sea salt. I know it's not something you get on when you are pregnant but when I did the cleanse, it WORKED! And I have thought of doing it again while pregnant because it doesn't cause cramping, etc. Any thoughts?

Btw, I have been craving apple juice so I bought some organic today and am telling the kids "hand off!" Maybe it will help, too!!

I'm doing much better, had two more bathroom trips this evening that were actually semi-emergent, so the cycle of loose/backed-up continues it appears

My doula is convinced that the baby's head is engaged causing these problems, and he DOES feel a lot lower, although I'm still not convinced it's a head down there and not a butt

I'm pretty sure that the droppeed baby is causing similar issues here. I have yet to find a cure that *always* helps, but metamucil seems to at least on occasion.

I had my husband pick up some Colace for me today. In the meantime, I'm "hypnopooping" -- seriously, it's working for me. Visualizing things moving around inside (they had me do this when I had a barium swallow done years ago), then using a hypnobabies technique for the pain.
