Fitteds: aplix vs snaps and why?

Is it just a personal preference? Or does one tend to fit better than the other - and does it matter for what the age of the baby is?

I hated snaps when dd was tiny but now that she can, and does, remove her own diaper at will with the aplix I can see the appeal. I guess you can't really do a one-size diaper with aplix, those would have to be snaps...right? I'm trying to envision this and what is the most practical long term.

I imagine snaps last longer and don't get caught on stuff in the wash, but is that true even if the fitted has fold-back tabs?

Snaps

I generally stay away from velcro or aplix. Snaps really do last longer. The fold back tabs for velcro help with stuff getting stuck together in the washer, and lint and hair getting into the velcro, but they don't really help with the longevity issue.

When we started with cloth I liked that the aplix was more adjustable. However, it gets crud stuck in it and it wears out. The only diapers or covers that have lasted through all of our kids (3 so far, and a 4th on the way so I want to keep using these diapers) were snap closure. Some velcro or aplix did better than others, but none of it lasted as long as snaps. Anytime I've had a snap break the company replaced the diaper or the cover.

Good snaps are also tighter than velcro/aplix. even if it's not starting to wear out. Once babies are mobile, active or starting to take off their own diapers that's a good thing.

We also far prefer snaps. The velcro or aplix doesn't last as long and our wiggle baby would sometimes get scratched by the hook end where it had rolled up from age and rubbed her legs or belly when she was sitting up (and thus squashed over, if you can picture it).

Snaps all the way for wraps, and snaps or nippas for the nappies.

I prefer aplix, because I feel like I can get a better fit on my skinny little DS. He always seems to be in between snap sizes.

Snaps last longer. But velcro gets a better fit and is quicker and easier to get on. I like having a mix- some snaps for longevity, some velcro for daddy/g'ma and middle of the night.

The other thing is that starting around 18 months, DS could get snaps off just as easily as velcro.

I'm a velcro person and that does have to do with being able to get a better fit on my babies with velcro. Also I find it easier to get on when they are wriggly. But snaps generally will last you longer.

Im slowly buying some snaps after being really anti-snap for ages. But I find it impossible to get the right fit. Basically one side is too tight and the other too loose because its either that or the whole thing is way too tight or way too loose. I can never get the right fit. They work, but are a pain to put on and are never quite comfortable. I havent yet had problems with the aplix wearing at all, but I have a lot of nappies so none are really run into the ground with use.

There are definately pros and cons to each:

snaps - more durable, harder for baby to take off (initially), look nice wash after wash, but aren't quite as adjustable as aplix diapers. Also, take a bit longer to get on super wiggly alligators.

aplix - super adjustable and easy to get on baby, but do have problems with durability and appearance after multiple washings.

I think it really is a matter of personal preference and the needs of your babe at that moment. I have gone back and forth several times with both in my DDs stash.

snaps for sure- baby can't undo them (although, a toddler mostly likely can) & they don't fall apart as fast.

velcro gets stuck to everything even when you use the laundry tabs, while I hold DD on my hipt he velco attaches itself to my shirt & my 7 month old can take her diaper off the velco also collects all kinds of lint/hair and it's a pain to clean plus some of my velcro is already coming undone and I *mostly* hand wash. the covers have only been in the washer or dryer a few times.

I have both and I don't think I can resell anything that had aplix, except for the four that I bought much later in the game and thus will not have been in service for as long when we finally PL. Although I do not have problems with the velcro catching on stuff, it is unraveling one thread at a time and on some of my dipes one whole side of the velcro has detached from the dipe

If resale value is not a consideration -- I think I would personally stick with mostly velcro for the ease of use. Our night dipes are snaps and I definitely have a much harder time getting those on. Fit has not been an issue for us though -- and I have skinny toddlers so that actually kind of surprises me.

Actually -- a further piece of input on resale value -- on my dream-eze the snaps are looking beautiful but the dipe itself is falling apart, so having snaps is not helping in this case. However -- my Fuzzi Bunz (which I bought used) are still in what I would consider VGUC-EUC.

It is a preference. I have both aplix and snaps, and I prefer snaps. They last longer, the diaper looks neater, and DS doesn't get 'velcro burn' on his belly from rubbing against the tape on the top. For front snaps there should def. be two rows. That way you can make the bottom tighter for legs and the top looser for bellies... or vice versa. I find that side snaps get a wonderful fit, using the same 2rows of snaps method.

I love velcro and find snaps a pain- they take a long time and are hard to get a good fit imho.

I bought 4 of each when I started and intend to sell my snap one-size covers- so sad to have spent like $20 on each of them (but they do indeed look cute).
